Maximum parcel dimension Limits / Pricing In Proportion

Tried to send a international signed for parcel today. Told length plus girth(2x (width plus depth)) could be no more than 900mm. Website says length plus width plus depth can be no more than 900mm. Anyone know which is correct?

Update 1
Post office also said similar restrictions due to come in for UK mail soon anyone know anything about this?

Update 2
Apparently Post Office is introducing a new system from 21 August called pricing in proportion which will take into account the size of the parcel rather than just its weight. Link here if anyone is interested.

  • Sorry can't help but on a similar note we have trouble sending our longbows out via royal mail due to size restrictions. We can no longer send them first class which is annoying and obviously they can't be cut down to post.

The post office said they couldn't be sent because they wouldn't fit in a standard van (!!!!!!!!) which is a load of codswallop cos they fit in my little peugeot 106!

    Annoying really!!!
Trying to save money to move to France.....eventually!

    £2 savers club = £24 saved so far :T

I had the same problem with a sword I tried to post. I had done a quick measureup and quoted for 1st class special delivery but when I got it to the post office they told me it was a cm or two too large and it had to go insured as a parcel. The Post Office wouldn't budge and that sword was only a broadsword not a longsword.

There was a very long discussion about the new policy on here when it was announced last year. I for one am concerned as I use jiffy bags and bubble wrap for items like books which will actually make my items 'fat' I can see sellers using plain paper envelopes in future to cut down on the dimensions.

I had already decided that I will have to stop selling some of my bulky but very light items as they will go up far too much in price to post.
