Compulsory Advertisement of Position

Is it each individual company that can write in their policies that if a vacancy arises it HAS to be advertised? I contacted a company about a possible vacancy that a friend told me about and they have said that they would like to see me, but that they do have to advertise the vacancy. Is this compulsory within certain sectors?

Yes - a company can have a policy saying all vacancies must be advertised, or certain vacancies must be advertised. Similarly, it can have a policy saying that internal candidates will be considered first.

Some public sector jobs must be advertised externally - even when the candidate has more or less been appointed internally :mad:

As the above poster has said, many public sector jobs have to be advertised (my friend used to work in HR at the local hospital and she said she felt it was daft as 9/10 the job had already been earmarked for someone internally). In all the private sector businesses I have worked at none of them has had a policy that a job must be advertised.
