2nd Chance Offer. Advice please.

I bid on an item earlier today and just recieved a second chance offer. I'm usually a bit suspicious of these as I got caught by a shill bidder and a second chance offer a while back. Could you take a look at these bidding times for me please and let me know what you think? The bids look odd to me. I bid with a sniper as I was out at the time. What I don't understand is how Bidder B's bid was on 5 Feb yet it didn't appear until the auction ended. right up til an hour before (when I went out) there was only one bid from Bidder A.

So, I'd like to know if it looks weird and why the sniper bid twice for me and also, if I accept the offer, should I only offer to pay the lower amount which I know isn't a lot less but I want to learn how it works too.

I hope that this all makes sense and thanks for taking a look!

Bid Amount Date of bid
£4.56 05-Feb-06 19:48:58 GMT (Bidder B)

£4.36 13-Feb-06 16:45:30 GMT (My bid)

£3.96 13-Feb-06 16:45:13 GMT (My bid)

£2.55 09-Feb-06 21:34:06 GMT (Bidder A)

Bidder B looks OK to me, he bid at least £4.56 back on 5th feb and was the winner with base price until Bidder A placed the bid on 9th Feb then bidder B still winner but at £2.75 then until your bid of £4.36 until near auction end, not sure why it bid twice but depends on your sniper tool.

Their could be many reasons for 2nd chance offer, Bidder B didn't want it, seller had 2 items. How long after auction end did the seller contact you?

I was contacted within minutes of the auction ending, the item was fairly rare so I don't think that the seller had two to sell.

I don't think that I explained properly. Bidder B's bid didn't show up until within the last hour of the auction. Up until that point the only bid that was showing was Bidder A at £2.55.

I hope that this helps make it clearer. Thanks. :)

  • It's legit. It means the seller has more than one item. It is a ploy I have used myself both as a buyer and as a seller. If you want the item, and you are satisfied with the price, go ahead and buy it.

It does seem strange that it didn't show up until the last hour, but I guess there is no way of knowing. If they were shill bidding, I don't think there is a way they could have placed a bid on the 5th, for it to show up on the 13th. I'm pretty sure if they had, for example, placed a low bid on the 5th and then added to it to increase it's amount, this would show up as a seperate entry.

You could e-mail them back and ask why the first person didn't want it. Like superscotsman said, it could also be that they do have a duplicate item for sale.

What is their feedback like? Have you checked out any of their other previous sales to see if there is a similar pattern?

You said the item was pretty rare, and you were willing to bid that much for it, so perhaps at the end of the day all you can do is ask yourself, do you want this item at that price? If that auction hadn't hapened, and you saw that item being sold by that seller in a BIN auction for that price, would you buy it?

Thanks for those replys, they've given me lots to ponder on. It's so good to have more than one head thinking about something!

  • you could always do a search back on items sold by the seller over the last month and see if the bidders name comes up on their other items.

I was hit by a seriously serial shiller at the weekend, and you can spot them a mile off when you do a search over the last month of selling.
