PVR with 80gig harddrive

Hi all,

I'm looking for a reliable pvr with 80gig hard drive and 2 freeview tuners if possible. Want to spend approx 150. I have been looking at the Panasonic twin tuner that Richer sounds do, however have seen one negative review for it (apparently has lots of bugs in it). Anyone had any experience with it, also are there any more recomendations.

I see there are both Sagem and Dewoo models in the price range. However I dont want a cheap model that I'll live to regret.

Many thanks.

  • Hi
Two better ones that the Pansonic are either the Humax9200 or Topfield 5800, but both have bigger drives than you want, so a bit more dearer, but both have excellent quality and repuatation.
    Here's the Humax9200

    And here's mine the Topfield5800

These might be out of your price range, but they really are excellent pvr's and least you can compare what your getting for your money.

    Hope this helps
  • They are a bit rich for my blood, I could just stretch to 200 qiud for a 5 star unit.

Many thanks Wonderfullife, obvously a bigger drive is preferable. However I really didnt want to spend too much. What I am really after is an affordable unit. Therefore a 80gig unit on personal recommendation would be ok. I have also seen some reviews of the Daewoo that say its a bit noisy.

The Humax is a great piece of kit and worth it.

As said 160gb hard disc with twin tuners you can record two channels and play back a previous recording. Also has usb2 so can interface with a pc.
  • The Humax is looking more and more tempting as time goes on. I supose i am getting twice the disk size for 30 quid more than the Panasonic. However I can get the previous Humax for about 120. Its got an 80 gig drive but I think only one tuner.

    Any thoughts on this?
  • Hi
I knew it'd get you, I personally went for the twin tuner, much more for your money.

These are the Humax Specs for single or twin tuner.
    Single Tuner
Its functionality is limited. So, while you can, for instance, watch one of the five analogue terrestrial channels while recording one of the Freeview ones, you can't watch one Freeview channel while recording another. So this box can only really be used (a) to record the Freeview programme you're watching, and (b) to schedule a Freeview recording for when you're not around.

    Twin Tuner
Enables you to watch one Freeview channel, whilst recording another onto its built-in 160GB hard disk or even record two different channels simultaneously, whilst watching a third - or playing back a previous recording!

I went for the Toppy but I've heard good things about the Humax and like you say its only £30 dearer than the Panasonic and a much bigger hard drive.

    Hope this helps
  • Many thanks all, I'm going to wait around a bit to get a good deal on the Humax.

    I have 3 Humax. The Fox-t, 8000 (40gb hard disc) and the 9200T.

The 8000 is also a good piece of equipment my daughter uses it upstairs in our bedroom to watch crapTV. Its pretty stable firmware now due to it being on the market for a few years. The 9200t has some issues but thats down to it being new, all hardware has issues with bugs etc. I am confident given there track record on support that Humax will iron tehse out, it doesnt deminish my viewing pleasure. Hell I have more issues with my Samsung LCDTV (HDTV with freeiew) that the Humax.
  • Many thanks all, have just recieved my Humax 9200t. Set it up yesterday and am chuffed with it. Purchased from 247 electrical for £203 and took 2 days to arrive. So am very impressed with service from 247. Could have got it for just under 199 from AVforU or Home (not sure which) but firm got lousy reiviews.
