It also has a digital receiver that gets 3000 channels. What is all this about and where can he find out more ? ( He's retired and bored & I was pushing him to get a hobby.. LOL ! ):D

Hotbird is a satellite that broadcasts to mainly mainland Europe.

Almost any LNB will receive broadcasts from Hotbird, subject to it being aligned to it, via a dish of the correct size.

Most of the channels are scambled ( no picture ) or are in a foreign language.

I wouldn't have thought of watching satellites as a hobby particularly as a lot of european channels are adult!

What sort of things is he generally interested in?

Satellites hopping is an excellent hobby, I have a motorised satellite dish, I get from 45w - 42e, I have thousands upon thousands of channels, sure there is alot of foreign stuff up there, but there is loads of English stuff to, there is for example the NBC Network feed (NBC Being the american version of ITV) or there are the MBC channels, they are English channels with Arabic subtitles showing the likes of what is on Sky 1, thats just a small example. On Hotbird at 13e there isn't really anything of interest to be honest.
