Free / cheap shopping cart and CMS

I'm creating a website for a friend at the moment which will have a small online shop on it (I have created quite a few websites for friends recently but this is my first with an online shop).
My friend needs to be able to edit the website herself once it is created and I am thinking of using wordpress to build the site in for this reason. Does anyone know of any reason wordpress can't / shouldn't be used with an online shop? If so can you recommend any other cheap / free CMS?
I was also wondering if anyone has any recommendations on cheap / free shopping carts out there?
Having done a little research I was thinking of using Paypal as the payment system and gather that I need to have a shopping cart integrated into the site (which I am assuming collates all the items the user is buying, adds the prices up, adds pre-determined postage and passes all the information on to Paypal - or am I assuming wrong here?).
Alternatively, me and my ex (a developer so he did all the techie side) once used easystorecreator to create a whole website with an online shop element, but the monthly fees seem to be higher than I remember. Is there something silimar, but cheaper, that I can use to create the whole site and which my non-techie friend would be comfortable editing content through once it's up and running?
Thanks

Thanks to you both. I heard mixed reports about Joomla. Like you have to pay extra for some basic add ons. Not sure if that's true or not.
