Holiday cottages Northumberland area

Just wondering if anybody has any links they could give me for holiday cottages in the Northumberland area that they have used before and would recommend? Have been searching on various sites but would like a personal recommendation if possible, as they all look good on the adverts! Have seen a few in a place that looks nice called Seahouses, anybody been there or live nearby? It'd be for me, hubby and our 2 kids age 6 & 4 and would like near the beach if poss, and preferably with a kiddies play area within walking distance too as we dont want to have to drive much while there if we can help it. A swimming pool nearby would be good too for any rainy days. Thanks!

Try looking at The Real Visitors Book website www.therealvisitorsbook.co.uk as all the postings on the site are detailed recommendations written by previous guests and not the owners. I think they have a page for Northumberland, although the site is fairly new so there may not be too many recommendations yet.
Another new site I've found is called My Cottage Holiday www.mycottageholiday.co.uk/ and this is the same concept as above, excepet they are reviews rather than just recommendations. Again, quite new but both sites are useful in that you get a guests' perspective rather than an owners!!

I know Seahouses well. Have done loads of days out there. Typical little seaside town(or village) Got a lovely harbour that you can book boat rides to the Farne Islands and see seals, puffin etc. You can also go to the lighthouse where Grace Darling helped rescue sailors in a storm- 1800s I think. There are a few shops and the most fab fish and chip restaurants. Some amusements for the kids and a little museum. The beach is lovely and clean:D. Plenty to do around the area.
Its not too far to visit Alnwick Gardens. A MUST if you are in the area. It has loads to do and a massive treehouse with cafe, restaurant, "poisons garden" and a gardens with water feaures and sculptures which kids can play in:j:j:j. I think its about £8 per adult but kids go free,
Try looking for Northumberland days out or GoWansbeck for more ideas.
Hope you enjoy your holiday.Start by doing what's necessary, then do what's possible and suddenly you are doing the impossible:j

The cottages at Ross are in one of the most beautiful areas ever!
http://www.rosscottages.co.uk/
Ross is a small hamlet and I've walked past them and they look lovely. Ross Sands beach is a walk away over protected sand dunes, but when you get there, it's the most beautiful curve of golden sands. Hardly anyone goes there due to the walk involved to get there, so sometimes you have the whole beach to yourself. Don't tell everyone about it though
You're in short driving distance of Seahouses, Bamburgh, Lindisfarne etc, which I know you were not keen on. However the location and scenery are worth that sacrifice IMO.Here I go again on my own....0 -
Try www.cottageguide.co.uk -it's a cottage website for the whole of the country where you book direct with the owners. There's a search facility for each county. There are loads on for Northumberland.
You'll find that cottage rates in Northumberland are still very reasonable - wonderfull countryside, beaches and castles - and no crowds!0 -
we've booked this for the second year............

Hi hate to say it but you need a car in Northumberland really. Seahouses is very family friendly and has a nice beach but this is no good if it rains! Don't miss Alnwick gardens for the day-take a full set of dry clothes for the kids as there are loads or water sculptures to play in and they will get soaked. Wouldn't bother paying the extra to get into the castle-unless you are really into castles!-Just explore the outside -i f your kids like Harry Potter they can pretend to be playing quidditch!!
Newton-by-the-sea has a lovely family feeling, nice safe beach and a great pub for lunch-great place to stay but cottages get booked very quick.
Another lovely day is to go to Craster and see the kipper sheds then walk to Dunstanburgh castle-amazing views and v. safe and kid friendly.
Not sure of your budget but the best cottages in the area are run by coastal retreats-fab but pricey-look for anything near the locations of their cottages and you will be fine. Know the area v. well so feel free to PM me if you want me to check out a cotttage before you book it. HTH.0 -
