Credit Card Debt. Best Solutions Please !

I have credit card debts of around £10K an I am currently unemployed.
I am going to draft a letter to sent to the credit card companies concerned asking for a reduction in payment.
Has anybody else done this and if so, what was the result?
I also have around £9K in a Retirement Investment acount which would solve the problem but as I am only 56, I am unsure as to whether I could claim it as a lump sum.
Any ideas?
