I wanna new career!

Hi all
I have been saying for a while now that 06 will be a good year to get myself into a new career.
My dilemma is this.I am married, mortgaged with 2 kids so cant really take a break from my existing job to dedicate to learning a new career full time...
I basically manage a team of 6 within a major media advertising comany for the last 10 years and have worked my way up,so it a kind of 'general' admin/office/clerical managerial skill I have and am not really trained in any 'profession' as such.I'm now 36 and I've seen the downward trend in this industry and feel its time to try something else.
I need to start making some enquiries and was wondering if anyone can offer any advice on how I would go about seeking a career change, training etc etc/

I have to be honest I am not sure what it is I'd like to do at this precise moment, but my current role has become dull and sluggish and although I have searched internally for vacancies there doesn't appear to be any scope for my future development..
Where do I start???

Thanks a lot for 'listening' and for any advice..
:j

I used a life and career coach last year, and one of the things she got me to do was rip out job ads that caught my eye for whatever reason, whether or not the job overall was something I'd like to do. For example you might rip out one in Dubai cos you like the idea of hot sunny weather, but the job is not you at all.

Then you collect all of these together and begin to get an idea of the kind of things you are looking for in your ideal job.

Also, why not write out all your skills, and see if they suggest something? What do you enjoy doing?

What is your ideal job in terms of work/life balance, money, team or solitary, etc.

Look at what things are important, and then you will at least have some clarity about what you want a job to provide for you, which may help suggest something.

Personally, I realised I loved my job but hated working for other people and being told what to so. So when I was made redundant a week ago it was a gift!! I now work for myself at home and it's great (ignore the fact I have not got dressed yet today though!)

    HTH a bit

  • There are loads of distance learning (and part time local college) courses available now, including Open University (although most of the OU courses have already started for this year) - which solves the problem of not being able to study/train full-time.

I am currently unemployed and trying to get back into admin work (been working in admin for approx 7 years). I know it's not really what I want to do, but I need the income to fund further study to change careers. I've spent a couple of hours today on the Learn Direct website in the careers section and got a few ideas! :)

    https://www.learndirect.co.uk

You can also call them and they will do a careers interview with you, I will do this next week when I've thought about possible careers some more. I have no idea about the courses Learn Direct offer as I haven't got that far yet, but the rest of the site content is helpful! Good luck.
  • Hi,

I currently work in HR - it is a job that you can try and get experience in within you company (can you try and get a sideways move into it?) you can then do your CIPD (HR) qualifications and then you can move around in many different areas and industries - it is a versatile skill to have.

Failing that - talk to HR about career options - they are there to help!

    Good Luck

  • hi

i have been thinkin of a career change to.
But have a mortgage and cant realy afford to study.

So i found a website and have signed up for a course in health and safety. There are many different courses and you study from home.
The best bit is that they are free if there are still placements in your area.

I know this is not a new career but i thought that getting a qualification would be a good start.
    Hope this helps
