I have just recieved an e-mail that contains a virus with martinsmoneytips@ moneysavingexpert as the sender.
The subject says re: excel file and all the e-mail contains is an attachment. Norton Antivirus managed to get it, don't know about any others or what would have happened if my comp had been infected

Just to point out the obvious that this has nothing to do with MSE. The golden rule is NEVER EVER EVER open an attachment from an unknown source. Also NEVER open an attachment form a known source unless you were expecting it. I have a yahoo.co.uk email address which does an excellent job of scanning and isolating these emails so they never get on my machine - and I can get up to 50 virus loaded emails a day.
These can arive in many ways. One way is as follows (and this is very much an oversimplification). You communicate a lot with email and have built up quite an extensive address book but you have never gotten round to putting a virus detector on your machine. At some point you receive a file that looks like it is coming from your mate and it has an attachment so you open it. Big no-no! You are now infected and the virus will scan your address books sending out emails containing the virus that look like they are now coming from you. These viruses are starting to get even more intelligent and can put what they like in the 'from' field of the email. So if, for example, you have communicated with MSE then it may find that email address and put it in the 'from' field and send the virus out. And who would suspect Martin of being a master criminal trying to bring down the internet with a virus.
