Part of the Furniture 10,000 Posts Name Dropper I've been Money Tipped!
I know this sounds a very stupid question, but I have never before cancelled a credit card and now want to.

Do you have to get something in writing to confirm that the account has definitely been closed, or is it just done over the phone?

Thanks.
Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time

I've always done it over the phone, just ask them to confirm the closure in writing and make sure you receive the letter.

Either way, I have done my last 3 the other week all by post.

I usually write on that there are no pending transactions and that i have destroyed the card.

I request a confirmation letter too, they usually send one advising about things like AOL subscriptions, car insurance etc - things that auto take a payment as these going through re-opens your credit card account.

  • Yeah, just call them up, will be done straight away, perhaps with a little persuasion to stay on if you are high value.

Every time i have phoned to try and do it, they have always asked for it in writing! so i do it like that automatically.
