Low ph cat food? where

I have a friend who is paying a fortune for this for this
bought through the vet.Im sure there must be some cheaper source for this.

What is the name of the food that they get from the vet?

Are you talking about a food to lower the PH in the urine, or is it a low protein/low phosphorous diet the cat has been put on? Specialist diets such as Hills Prescription Diet are (as the name suggests) only available on prescription from a vet.

If it's the former, is your friend's cat suffering from cystitis or a problem with it's urinary tract? Are they feeding dry food only? If you post a little bit more about the cats health, I should be able to help you out a bit more.

Purina Pro Plan do a 'Light' version of their cat food, which contains low amounts of magnesium to aid urinary tract health in cats. It is also formulated to reduce urinary PH.

If by 'low ph' cat food you mean a cat food that is low in phosphorous then try looking on this website which is an excellent site about CRF in cats (kidney failure).

This page of the site lists the composition of prescription cat food and normal cat food. I feed my cat Felix Senior alu-trays as it is lower in phosphorous than many of the other brands and is also nearly always on 'buy 2 get 3rd free' at Jollyes!!

She is very fussy and she scoffs it down...

Why doesn't your friend explain to the vet that they can't really afford the prescribed food and ask if they could recommend what would be the best cheaper alternative. I know that my vet wouldn't mind doing that.

i had the same problem with one of my dogs she needed low fat dog food and was paying £1.66 per tin i did a bit of research and asked the vet about what i found out and she ended up on chappie @33p per tin a lot of difference especialy when shes on 2 tins per day and the chappie is made by the same people as the food from the vet, its saved me about £13 per week so its worth doing some research about it or trying to get in touch with other people whos cats have the same problem on some special cat forums who have the same condition
