What can I use as an alternative to sugar?

I am wondering if there is any alternative to sugar that I can use in my tea as I have tried all sorts of alternatives such as Splenda, Aspartame, Saccharin etc (and Stevia uber yuk) and I find them all disgusting. I currently use demerera (1 spoonful) in my tea and I really want to reduce my sugar intake (bad for teeth and health) but I find it very hard to kick the habit and I love my tea (i have about 10 cups per day :embarasse). So is there anything out there that tastes a lot like sugar but is not as unhealthy as sugar. I really need to beat this but cold turkey never works and I crack after a few days of no sugar.

Any advice appreciated!

  • I am the same tried loads of sweetners and they all tasted bitter until I tried sweetners called sweetness & Light, not sure who they are made by but they are in a white and purple clicker container. I really can't tell the difference.

I too found the sugar substitutes to unpalatable and so I used to take sugar in my tea but I switched to drinking green tea. It is served just as it comes, without milk and sugar. You soon get used to the taste. I now very rarely drink black tea and if I do, my taste buds have been re-educated and I do no need sugar.

Likewise, if I have a coffee I do not need sugar in it.

Bite the bullet and give up sugar and sweeteners.

You might think it hard to drink tea without sweeteners, but a few weeks without and you will never go back.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.
  • You could use 3/4 of a spoon for a week, then 1/2 a spoon, then 1/4, this is how my brother cut down when he was on a health kick years ago.
Mind you he got down to a few grains of sugar (he could tell the difference if you didnt put it in) and could not give that up for years lol
also if you stir fast you wont notice the cut in sugar

Sugar isnt unhealthy - the amount you consume is :)

Bite the bullet and dump the sugar in the tea. Will take a while to get used to it but honest you will soon be wondering why you ever took sugar. I used to take sugar, gave up when out of work and couldnt afford it 20 years ago and now if I even take a sip of sugared tea I feel sick. Its so sweet and claggy in the mouth, not at all refreshing.Tea tastes so much better without sugar

With 10 cups of tea a day it's not only the sugar levels you need to worry about!

That's a hell of a lot of caffine too.

Do you have sleep problems? It's also a fair bit of fluoride to be heaping into your body (and this is from a fluoride fan!)

Cut down the NUMBER of cups of tea, as well as the sugar in it.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Oh. I'd never thought about the flouride. I have no trouble sleeping at all. I really should cut down. I guess sugary tea is my comfort drink and makes me feel all warm and cosy. I really have to stop associating it with feeling safe etc.

Try some flavoured teas like the creme caramel and the chocolate flake teas from Teapigs. I used to be a proper 'builder's tea' girl (so appropriate as I work in the construction industry :p ) and refused to drink it if it didn't have at least two sugars and milk. However the two teas above are sweet in their own right and can be taken with just milk or on their own. It might help re-educate your palate a bit. ;)

    Personal pronouns are they/them/their, please.

I'm intolerant of wheat, citrus, grapes, grape products and dried vine fruits, tomato, and beetroot, and I am also somewhat caffeine sensitive.

I had to go and look for teapigs because I had never heard of them (and frankly can't think of anything more revolting than chocolate in tea!)

However my suggestion is going to be rooibos or redbush tea. You can drink it with milk (although some people think that's barbaric) and it's now my favourite.
