Oyster card - is this a scam?

I work from home so use my Oyster card only now and then. Yesterday, at a local newsagents, I put £13.80 on my Oyster card and for the first time ever had to pay an additional 40p (to the newsagent). At first, I thought that this was because I paid by debit card (my Oyster card receipt says £13.80, and my debit card transaction receipt says £14.20). But then the woman behind me paid £3 cash to put £3 on her Oyster card, and was charged an additional 30p.
Is this above-board, does anyone know, please?

wrong board - Mods please move this along some where that is more appropriate0

You could try the motoring & public transport board.0

Thread moved to the travel board.
Most small shops charge a fee for the convienence of using debit cards as it costs them to rent the machine and they get charged per transaction0 -
right board now.. this is right up our street
i've once been to a newsagents in west hampstead, who charged me 50p to pay by card... it's probably nothing to do with topping up your oyster..
as the person behind you wasn't paying by card, it seems odd that there is an admin charge.... tfl.gov.uk might have some info

Off topic Oyster card that i know one of you good people could help me with....
I have never used an Oyster card, and have no idea how they work -yet i have one(think i ordered one for free off the TFL website some time ago)
...Anyway, i am going to London for a few days next week and i would like to use it -as i know it means cheaper fares.
My questions are:
how do you add credit to it(there is no barcode or anything on it??)
& how do i find out what i need to add. I know ill need a Zone one pass for one day when im in the central area only, and a Zone1-5 pass for two other days when ill be ot near Elstree.
Stupid questions i know but i am clueless as to how it works...
Thanks0 -

ThanksThe common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.0 -

i do agree with stoneman that you shouldn't hijack other threads, but if you look on tfl.gov.uk you'll find all the info you need..
1 - it is a touch senstive card.. actually its a mifare proximity card, but that's just techy
2 - you touch in, add credit via the machine, and touch out. boom easy
3 - it works out what zones you need by touching in and out, and caps if a travelcard would be cheaper0 -

Getting back to the point
Did you ckeck the balance before your re-credited?
If there isn't quite enough money on the oyster card to finish your journey it will let you out of the station, but a debit balance will stay on the card until you next top it up.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0
