Living in the USA - can I claim back interest that I pay on my UK student loan on tax

Hello

I am hoping someone can help me.

I am an ex pat (british citizen) and legally live in America now after leaving the UK 5 years ago.

I have a student loan from the UK which I have been dutifully paying back every year since I moved here via a direct debit from a UK account that I have still have active (one of the 1998 ones - the worse style of student loan possible!).

Can I claim back the interest I pay on this loan on my USA tax return?

If anyone has anything on this I'd be most grateful as the SLC have been forthcoming with help!

Cheers,

As you are asking about your US returns, surely you would be best to ask in the US?
    Gone ... or have I?
  • Yes I have tried and no one seems to know, therefore I thought someone in the UK might have once been in the same situation.

I very much doubt it, but the US tax authorities would be the best place to enquire.
