free music downloads

does anyone know of any free download sites? i remember seeing one somewhere before where you could download the music for free which had advertising before and after the songs.

The site which has legal downloads with 10s ads at the front is We7
http://www.we7.com/
That's the main one which includes mainstream artists.

There's also Jamendo
http://www.jamendo.com/en/

And worth mentioning the Live music archive which is a huge resouce, if bit limited in it's scope. It's mainly American based, and what's there really depends on what bands those willing to record and upload gigs actually listen to.
If anyone else is a fan of the Decemberists and stuck on the other side of the Atlantic, there's some brilliant gigs on here.

You can't download everything unfortunately, although you can listen to them. If they're available for download there will be an arrow icon next to the black buttons beside a track. e.g. if you look for Estelle one track has been made available. http://www.we7.com/#/artist/Estelle?artistId=5439

You can search just for downloadable music if you click browse music on the home page (right hand side in blue) and then change the dropdown 'all music' setting under the artists tab to 'free downloads'.
