freecycle???
ive tried to join but you have to ask the person who runs each area. its so confusing...
ive tried 2 areas near to where i live , you have to write about yourself and tell them why you want to join and about yourself. i find this is a bit personal. i just put "can i join your group please".
also you cant join with your current email address either , you have to join yahoo!!! so i have a new yahoo address now:eek: i'll never remember it.
nowt like making it easy.
anyhow now my memberships are pending ! what a clart on

Hello there,
I also found that first part a bit strange, think i put something like 'would love to join, got lots to give away' they seemed to like that.
Couple of bits of advice
1, you have to offer something for free before you put out a wanted add (not sure whether thats just my local freecycle though)
2, When you put something on offer, you tend to get alot of replies with people begging for the item, with comments like 'My grandchildren would love these'. Don't get pulled in, you can tell alot of people want stuff to chuck on a carboot, so try and filter them out
3, Our last freecycle experience wasnt the best, We were giving away a tv, explained that it was old and very heavy, someone replied, we arranged collection for the next day. An old man turned up, couldnt hold himself up, and wasnt able to lift the tv with me. He also smelt drunk, and continously asked to use our toilet. Arranged collection again, but didnt turn up.
But apart from that, it can be brilliant, you can pick up some real bargains and get rid of stuff thats in your way
Hope this helps!0 -
I think its just to weed out spam- if you could just click and sign up then I would imagine it would be a great deal easier for people to post spam, and already they get thier fair share of it! (hence why the first few posts for each person will go through a moderator rather then just being posted up automaticly).
Once you have joined, you'll see what I mean! It is worth joining in my experience, and just say that you read about freecycle somewhere and want to get rid of some stuff (you have to offer something before you can take anything).0 -
You can join with your existing email address, you need to sign up to yahoo but you don't need a yahoo email. I used a hotmail account.:www: :: MFi3 ::

My OH is a freecycle group owner on two sites, and the question isasked to help weed out the people who just want to take take take.
I've seen loads of the reasons that people join and it shocks me to see that people just put things like "I want free stuff", "cos i heard it is good for freebies", "I'm a single parent/disabled/student/pensioner/ex-con/asylum seeker and I need stuff".
Freecycle is just as much about giving as receiving, and too many people seem to forget this.
Re: the Yahoo email address, that is because all Freecycle groups run on the Yahoo groups platform, which can only be accessed using a Yahoo email address. Freecycle did look at moving to their own platform, but for some legal reasons, they would not be allowed to use the Freecycle name outside of the Yahoo groups.
Crldnll at #2 makes a good point about the people responding to offers - all the sob stories tendto come out, but if you search the board for their user nae, you can see how many items they have offered, and how many they have taken. Some people are just on the take all the time, and are constantly on the board ready to respond to every offer. It is best not to offer to the frst person, but to get a few repsonses and decide who ou think is most deserving.<--- Nothing to see here - move along --->0 -
Apparently there are changes afoot with Freecyle that will see a "Taken" post delete your previous "Offer."
This means that a) the search on a user name to see how much the person asking for your item has offered won't be an option any more, and b) if you offer a list of items rather than several posts for single items, which our local group has insisted on recently, the whole of your original post gets deleted, even if only 1 or 2 items are taken.
These changes are coming from the Freecycle giants over the pond and are being implemented without the UK moderators / group owner's control.
Has caused some consternation in our local group, but it's not a decision that's been made by our mods. The fact there's been no consultation hasn't gone down well either.
Just thought I'd pass it on...Worse things will have happened in the world today..."The only thing that really matters, it to love and to be loved."0 -
I had to do this with my local Freecycle. They never even had the courtesy to reply. Oh well - the local tip appreciated it!0

This is actually a yahoo thing, not a freecycle thing. I noticed it recently when I tried to join a couple of other yahoo groups. I think it would be okay to just say you are into recycling and hate throwing things away other people could use etc.0
