California Accomodation

Hi,
We are hoping to visit California for the 3rd time this July. We will be staying with Relatives for a couple of weekends in San Diego but are looking at somewhere to go to chill out for a week. We have looked at places we have stayed before (Hyatt Regency Newport Beach) but hotels are coming in very expensive due to exchange rate and time of year.
Does anyone have any reccomendations for accomodation ? Requirements are just somewhere within a few hours of SD to chill out with a pool , even be willing to rent a condo - looked at Dana Point (had a look at Holiday-Rentals.co.uk - anyone know of other sites ?)
Thanks

There's a fabulous hotel in the area that I booked for a friend 18months ago, but I can't remember the name of it and it's driving me mad. You know when you could draw a picture of it but the name escapes you...and I booked it for him as part of a two centre stay with the Anaheim Marriott.
If you spot it yourself online, it's a blue, wooden heritage house on a cliff top with stunning views over the Pacific and in the Huntingdon Beach area.
There are some absolutey gorgeous hotels in the area that you should be able to get at a discount through the sites mentioned on this forum, but just a few lovely ones are...

Palm springs for a few days go up the mountain on the rotating cable car thats a great day out, do the walk of fame yes they have their own version there similar to the holywood walk of fame, go to Sedona and take in the red rock canyons or in my opinion do these two for a great contrast between these two and the beach area of San Diego.
Enjoy:hello: Lets all save a £ or two, lets all earn a £ or two, and lets all enjoy spending that £ or two wisely.

Depending on how far you want to go, you could head up to San Simeon stay there and then go on one of the tours of Hearst Castle which is amazing. Along that coast you have Venice Beach where there are lots of handmade things in the little shops there along the beach, lovely Indian beads/jewellery etc. You can stop and have a look at the body builders on Muscle Beach whilst there too! Pasadena is another place worth visiting - our son was married there seven years ago and during our stay we took my mother to Venice Beach and pointed out the area cordoned off for Muscle Beach & she had been expecting an area where you could get shellfish!! Palm Springs, as already mentioned, is great and the Arial Tramway is good http://www.pstramway.com/ although each time I've been up there I wonder why I do it especially coming back down but take something warm up the top as it's sometimes rather cold. Regarding accommodation, you can pick up booklets in the fast food places and you need not book anything but just stop where you want. In these booklets there are coupons with reductions for different motels - you can also go on line to the website at http://www.roomsaver.com/ We travelled Route 66 and just stopped when we wanted to see something or had had enough driving for the day and we travelled the whole way using the coupons from these booklets. I'd better stop now as there are so many interesting places around there I could go on but one last one - http://www.wigwammotel.com/ - if you go to Palm Springs you'll have to stop off and stay in this motel and then you can go to Molly's cafe San Bernardino which is well known.
Hope all of this helps and enjoy your holiday0
