What exactly do points mean?
On FHM.com, you get points for interacting with the site. Browsing, commenting, publishing stories to Incoming, sending recommendations to friends, tagging articles to your favourites, anything.
The full points chart is here:

• +200 points
  For every story of yours we publish in Incoming.
• +10 points
  Any time one of your friends clicks on a story you send them.
• +5 points
  Anytime you comment.
• +2 points
  Anytime you rate a story.
• +1 points
  Read a story, watch a video, click the mouse frantically.

As you accumulate points, you will be able to enter all our competitions. The bigger the prize, the more points you’ll need. Don’t worry, it doesn’t take long to accumulate the necessary number.

BTW, does anyone ever win on the FHM comps? Has anyone struck lucky on the tombola competition?

If you make a couple of comments you earn points and they don't seem to deduct them when you enter a competition.
