Hi
I am posting this on behalf of my DD1 who is currently studying for her A2s. She was trying to save a word document (Word 2007) to her Emtec memory stick when she lost the connection. She removed the stick, replaced it and then screen went blue. The computer then restarted and she can't now access the file that she was working on (exam coursework). Is there anything we can try?
Thanks.

Hi Thomas and thanks. Apparently it did, although the file was only on her memory stick so she can see the file sitting there, but it will not open. It says "the directory name is not valid" because it cannot read it from the stick.YOUR = belonging to you (your coat); YOU'RE = you are (I hope you're ok)

If she can see the file, can she not copy it to the desktop and rename it to a proper word document:idea:0

"In the File, Open dialog box, after selecting the document, click the arrow by the Open button and select Open and Repair."

"If you use Microsoft Office Word 2007: Click the Microsoft Office Button, click Word Options in the lower-right corner, and then click Advanced. Scroll through the headings until you find the Save section, which is close to the end of the list. If the Always create backup copy setting, located in the Save section, is selected, Word created a backup copy of the document."

Thanks Thomas. Just checked and the Always create backup copy is not ticked (unfortunately). She has now ticked it.
Your other suggestion about File, open etc does not work because the file is not accessible. Message reads H:\School is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.
Is it as bad as it sounds?YOUR = belonging to you (your coat); YOU'RE = you are (I hope you're ok)

Did you try the other methods? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/8270990

Will have a look in a minute. She is downloading something called Recuva at the moment that was also recommended. Will keep you posted and thanks for your time.YOUR = belonging to you (your coat); YOU'RE = you are (I hope you're ok)

Well the Recuva download seems to have got some of the files back, some are still empty though but she is now saving the recovered ones somewhere safe. Sorry, she knows an awful lot more about computers than I do. However, she is a lot happier than she was a couple of hours ago and seems to think she can get most of her stuff back.
Thanks to everyone who replied, especially Thomas.YOUR = belonging to you (your coat); YOU'RE = you are (I hope you're ok)

The link that was provided helped me a lot. I would hate to have a repeat of last year.0
