Ebay profits

I see that their profits are well down http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/01/22/ebay_q4_earnings/ They are blaming the economic downturn, can't have anything to do with changes made last year of course. I thought this ebay etc forum was getting a lot quieter recently.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

Donahoe, you got to let your sellers go-go-go...

Oh, it seems they already are.
  • The stupid thing is, if Ebay was still using its original buisness model of being an outlet for the normal person to pass on there stuff and make a few quid they should have flourished through the hard economic times,

But as it is people will find other outlets to avoid the thieves paradise..

ebay are blaming this on "unprecedented economic conditions" - which may or may not be true, but when Amazon release their figures for the same period next week, then we can see if this drop is universal across online sales outlets, or if it is a localised problem within ebay.

It's no secret that eBay are frequently changing their business model, and with any business model changes it takes a while to settle down. It's my view that too many changes in the last year have not allowed for a stable platform for growth, whilst the economic problems have only inflamed the fall in revenue and profits.

But still - $120m PROFIT per month?!!!

    It's hardly a Woolworths situation.

Yes remind me again how many business are actually making a real profit at the moment?

Personally I am not surprised that they have suffered a bit due to some strange new policies and I note their share price has slipped a little. However if you read all the blurb on all the financial sites this profit was actually higher than the market was expecting it to be.

I thought they would have gone down much further than that, they do not seem to be any real bargains on there and have not been for a while.
No you're not a vegetarian if you eat any animal or fish, so do not insult genuine veggies by calling yourself one!

With the £ being so devalued it makes finding bargains hard for us. However, the sales coming in from overseas are staggering in some categories..I am shipping a lot of stuff overseas now purely because of the exchange rates, it makes stuff sold in pounds look very cheap.

Amazon have announced their Q4 and 2008 year end results.

    '08 Q4 revenue - $6.7 billion up 18% from $5.67bn in '07 Q4
    Whole 2008 revenue was $19.17bn compared to $14.84bn in 2007 - up 29%

    2008 profits $645m, 2007 was $476m - a 36% increase.

No "unprecedented economic conditions" being seen by Amazon then...
