Not happy with my haircut

I have always had fairly short hair and always had a great hairdresser. However I missed a couple of appts and she now won't answer my calls. So I started going to a fairly pricey salon nearby. They always colour my hair well and I changed from the most senior stylist to a more junior one to save money. However the last couple of times I have been she has not cut my hair how I wanted and I ended up with a graduated bob. I went today for a cut and colour and whilst the colour was taking I looked through some style books and chose a short cut similar to how I always used to have my hair. The girl really did not want to cut much off and I had to insist twice on having it shorter. I am really pleased with the colour but the cut is just a much shorter bob which is not what I wanted. What can I do as the price was not cheap?

  • Any reputable salon should give you a free consultation before they do anything to make sure they know what you want and if it will suit you. The stylist may not have wanted to go as short as you wanted because they felt it wouldn't have suited you (I'm only guessing here). Go back to the salon and explain the situation. I would hope they would re-cut your hair for either free or a reduced rate. You are the customer here and they won't want to lose a client/money. But, this is really benefit of hindsight, as you really needed to say something to them at the time - maybe a lesson for next time.
  • I would make sure next time that I went for my haircut that I got what I wanted. For quite a while now me and my mum used a home hairdresser because it was more convenient for us at first she was brill and then we back her agony aunts as she just chatted about taking her ex to court ect ect but also cut our hair wrong and wonky!

So in the end we didn't use her again and went to someone who's ironing we do his salon is fantastic the staff are really nice and everything and with us also knowing him he makes sure we get what we want.

I did use to go to a salon and have my hair dyed too and cut it use to cost £60 but still wasnt what I wanted.

But insist on what you want or ask for someone else to do your hair.

    Good luck

So I started going to a fairly pricey salon nearby .... well, that's because you messed your last one around!!! . They always colour my hair well and I changed from the most senior stylist to a more junior one to save money but you clearly still expected the senior stylist quality?? . However the last couple of times I have been she has not cut my hair how I wanted and I ended up with a graduated bob so why go back to the junior stylist?? I went today for a cut and colour and whilst the colour was taking I looked through some style books and chose a short cut similar to how I always used to have my hair. The girl really did not want to cut much off and I had to insist twice on having it shorter perhaps you should have suggested at that stage that you see someone else? I am really pleased with the colour but the cut is just a much shorter bob which is not what I wanted. What can I do as the price was not cheap? treat your favoured hairdressers with more respect in future???

I showed the girl a photo in a hair magazine and it was almost exactly how I always had my hair cut by my previous hairdresser. During the hair cut I had to ask her twice to cut it shorter and when she asked me if I wanted the back graduated into my neck I said no but that is exactly what she did. I am partially sighted , which she knows, and it wasnt till I go home and looked in a magnifying mirror that I realised that she had graduated it into my neck and also there are some bits tat are longer than others. The photo I showedher was quite clear but she kep saying you can see the back , but ny good hairdresser would have known what to do. I am going to find a picture of how it should be and ring up and ask to see the owner this morning. I am beginning to think that maybe she does not know how to cut hair properly! Sorry to rant but I am so upset. Thanks for your thoughts.
  • Look, just my view, I understand that you are upset, but hair grows - and she didn't cut it short. Perhaps you should ask that for the next appt the owner comes over to give advice.

But why not try to get back to the old hairdresser you liked - it seems to me that even hairdressers are having a few problems. Mine said people are still going but less frequently - every 7 weeks or so, rather than 6 (actually that's me). Perhaps the previous stylist would be glad to have you back.

    Good luck though

Try another salon? I had been with one for years, though different stylists in the same place - they never seemed to understand what I meant, I assumed it was down to me not being any good at explaining or visualising things.

Rang up a few months ago to book a colour and cut and they were too busy so I tried another place - FANTASTIC, the girl cut it exactly as Id always wanted, the colour is exciting and wonderful and people actually stop me and ask where I go now.

Its a case of trying somewhere else I guess AND not letting them down when you find a good one. If you dont keep an appointment the hairdresser loses money and nowdays no one can afford to do that.

You are probably right however she quite often kept me waiting for more than 1/2 hour when I went to her ( she worked from home). I have lost her number but I think I am going to send her a card and ask if she will see me again and I will even give her a deposit. She is a brilliant hairdresser and I should have held on to her. I am going back to the salon this afternoon to see the other girl to try to sort it out.

By all means try by sending her a card and offering the deposit, don't be surprised though if another client has taken your place. Working from home is a lot tighter for her than a salon, where many stylists can share the load.

I think you'll find the reason for being kept waiting half an hour is that other unthinking clients were late. Only takes three before you, at ten minutes late each and there you have it, her whole day messed up.

Had that happened in a salon, I'd say that was not acceptable, in her home though she has no one to shampoo etc., whilst she finishes off the previous.

You will have been back to the salon when you read this, but I do hope you let them know you were going, as having to rectify a complaint without an appointment will also throw their timings out.
I do wish clients had as much consideration for hairdressers as they do for their dentist. Both of whom work to a tight schedule, perhaps salons should start billing for persistent latecomers/missed bookings as dentists do.

I'm sure that they will rectify the situation foc. Look forward to reading the outcome.

I went back this afternoon ( I had a new appt) and the girl was really nice nd cut it exactly as I wanted it. They did not charge me either! So faith restored and all is well.
