pls help ,big red worm under bath

Does anybody know what this could be,my 16 yr old daughter has just seen a 3 inch thin red worm disappear under a crack at bottom of bath panel, ive never heard of this but feel sick at the thought there may be thousands of them riggling about there,I always keep my home clean,
Also I rent my home from council so does anybody know if they would get rid of them, if there does turn out to be an investation

I wouldn't panic, it doesn't mean you have dirty house, it probably just came in out of the cold. There are often cracks and gaps under the bath, is the bathroom on the ground floor?
If the bath panel comes off easily, just have a look, it's probably one lonesome worm, who took a wrong turn, he's probably more worried than you.
It could even be a millipede, they are quite red and squeeze through little gaps and look worm like, at first glance.

hope you are right,it isnt ground floor though, but I can see what you say could make sense
I googled "red worm in bath"and some one had wrote they had a red worm in toilet and was told it was a horse hair worm, but I dont know if thats what this was and couldnt find anything else about horsehair worms

How quickly did it dissapear? Could it have been a mouse's tail?
    Looking forward to the future.
  • Whilst I can completely understand the 'ugh' factor of seeing something.

It is possibly a sign of an issue with the fabric of the house. Earthworms (if thats what it was) need a damp environment to survive, so could there be a small leak? Same with other 'pests' they need somewhere they can survive & find a food source.

Give your council Landlords a call, don't say what you think it was just report it as a pest. Get them to sort it & once you know what it was you can press them to resolve any harbourage points, etc.

Sleep easy, 'cos its probably more scared of you than you are of it;) .

Nothing is easy........'til you find out how!
  • thanks for your helpfull coments, after a couple of seconds panick my daughter pointed out the crack is much to small for a mouse to fit in,
I will ring council on monday morning,I for some reason feel really embarressed, like they will think im dirty, but the thought they could actually be breeding down there, overcomes any fear of admiting my poor house has worms(or a leaste a worm)

I think that you would be amazed to find out just how small a hole that a mouse can get through. I also doubt whether many the underneath of many baths would bear close scrutiny. In my experience the underside of a bath is very mucky place to be. I would have thought that it would be unlikely that an earthworm would stray that far from its normal environment and food source.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

    Mortgage-free Glee!
Apparently rodents have a flexible skeleton which means if their head can get through a gap, they can follow
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D

Could it have been a House Centipede perhaps?

  • Thats shocking about mice,I was just telling my sister your comments and she agrees, and said she has also heard they have a flexiable skull, and can get through area's as small as an 1/8 of an inch

ive just found out that this week the council are refitting my bathroom ,putting in a new toilet and bath, they are doing up all kitchens and bathrooms in the whole of doncaster, so ill be holding my breath when the work men are here, just waiting to hear the dreaded urrrg,I really hope I havent got an investation of anything, but i will post either way ,any nasties they may find,
    oh the shame....
