I converted my double garage into a flat. The wall which was attached to the house was battened with 50mm x50mm timber and 50mm slab insulation placed between the battens. The outside wall was converted to a cavity by building a frame of 100mm x 50mm which stood on a brick dwarf wall with a DPC on top of it. The spaces between the upright frames was filled with 100mm fibre-glass insulation. The old garage floor was coated with Syntheproof to form a damp proof layer. The floor was then covered with 50mm polystyrene slabs covered with a large plastic sheet and boarded over with 2400mm x 1200 T&G flooring. The roof had 200mm fibreglass put in it.
All in all, as snug as a bug in a rug. My son lived in it for 10 years and said it was easy to heat. It now has a radiator connected to the house heating boiler. I hope this helps.
I can afford anything that I want.

I converted my garage into my office last year the council are pretty good at pointing you in the right direction also try your local library for copies of the regs and books on the code of practice, for Part L you can find fair bit online with each wall type, window, roof window, cold space, and ceiling with the required U factors,
I insulated the floor as i made a false floor to match level of house (garage was 1m lower) so this created a cold space under the floor I used 6" loft insulation in this
I baterned adjoining wall to the neighbours garage with 50mm and filled with king span panels 50mm thick

insulated new front all with cavity slabs

and worse of all pitched ceiling I insulated that with 2x 70mm celotex fiber board with 50mm air gap! and breethable felt but dont ask! originally i put 1 layer of 70mm in between the roof rafters and I was asked to add another layer the requirement is 130mm insulation from the ceiling to the roof, so i had to extend all the rafters with 50 battern to accomidate

to be honest when the council inspector comes out they can help you with advise as they need to request what needs to go where.

but dont do like i did and argue witht them although they agreed with me in the end probably wasnt worth the hastle!

    hope that helps

"sarcastic" - I know what you mean, youll find it comes from those that dont get out much, which isnt suprising else they may never make it back.

When I did my garage conversion I found the Building Control Inspector to be extremely helpful with his advice. It saved me a lot of work and money.
When I built my first house I did something that the Inspector did not like. So I said "well what should I do then". He said "I am not allowed to tell you, but if you tell me what you propose to do, I will tell you if that is all right" We went on in this vein for some time and eventually I came up with a satisfactory solution. It was an interesting morning.
