to wow my guests with.
My 30th (sob) birthday is on the 31st of this month.
I'm not a fan of my birthday but my H and children (& rest of the family) will not let me get away with doing nothing for my 30th.
I have decided to have an informal gathering at my house & to order in lots of yummy chinese food.
I'm going to go with a chinese theme and have bought my little dd some chinese style p.js to wear (she is 1 so will look very cute lol)
I have been looking at chinese style decorations and they are quite expensive.
Has anyone got any mse ideas??
We have some fireworks left over from Nov & I have bought some of the sky lanterns to let off before everyone leaves :T
I'm quite excited about it now and I usualy HATE birthdays :rotfl:

Have a couple of bowls of prawn crackers and a couple of dips for people to nibble before food arrives.
Offer Tiger beer to drink.
All eat with chopsticks (not your 1yo of course!!!).
How about fortune cookies for after dinner.
Maybe light your room with candles to make it pretty.

speak to the people from your local chinese shop/restaurant for ideas of what they do at events.
can you not make any of the chinese style decorations?
google chinese new year as thats coming up. search the £1 shops - mine recently had packs of mugs and glasses with chinese symbols on. they alsways have dragons etc. go to a couple of travel agents and get brochures of chine etc and make your own pictures.

Chinese supermarkets are great places, all the nibbles you get at the take-away come in catering packs for only slightly more than you'd pay for a couple of portions and they'll probably have decorations at this time of year0

Chinese New Year is on 26th Jan this year so you could get your basics in now then try and grab some bargains after then. 88

Congrats on the 30th, I'm not far behind you!
What about paper chains (not sure that they're that Chinese, but easy and cheap), use different coloured paper or paper from magazines (or even different shades of red, lucky colour!), loop them shut with glue or tape and then loop the next chain through, etc.
Not sure if have explained well enough

Thanks peeps :rotfl:
Last night I made some lanterns myself from red card I had over from christmas.
They look really effective. Will get a pic on soon.
I was thinking. I know its tradditional to give out paper money but I'm not about to start handing out £5 notes lol
I thought of making some of the little choc bars that I have done for my boy's parties in the past but with a money picture printed on the front.
I might get one of my rellies in Scotland to send me some £1 notes to give to the children in little red envelopes :T Do they do those still??
I remember when we were little my gran used to send the 4 of us a scottish £1 note each :j
I'm going to get some red crepe paper and have streamers hanging from the celling.
I'm hoping to find a red chinese style top to wear and get some of those hair chopsticks.
Thanks
Em

happy birthday or should I say 生日快乐 in advance! :-)
how about a few chocolate gold coins in the red packets? its not about the money really, more abt the red packet! or maybe a pound coin amongst the chocolate gold coins?
btw, thought you might like to know, the 31 Jan this yr, being the 7th day of the Lunar New Year, would be what the chinese call 'ren ri', ie the day when man and woman were made (from clay I think, can't remember exactly all the old chinese myths and legends) the chinese generally regard that day as everybody's birthday! so there we go, we should all celebrate our birthdays with you! :beer:0 -
yes we still have pound notes in Scotland. Not in everyday use but if you have someone who can go to a bank they should be able to get them for you.0

My local chinese community centre handed out red envelopes with £1 coins in them last year to all the kids so coins must be okay too, chocolate coins is a fab idea and very cheap at this time of year.Tesco have their bags of christmas gold coins at half price and they are not decorated chrismassy(I think they are actually chocolate euros) so suitable for any occassion.I ma getting them to use for a pirate party."Reaching out to touch the stars dont forget the flowers at your feet".0
