Hi Hayley, good luck with your new crochet hobby. I've crochet'd for quite a while now and really enjoy it. (I'm not brilliant at it but get by)
I just wanted to show you this free website, not only for amigurumi but for all sorts of crochet patterns. They also have a knitting pattern central too.
    http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/directory/amigurumi.php
Anything with a + by the side of it usually takes you to the lion brand website which you need to do a free registration for but I've been signed with them for quite a while and never had any spam or been pestered by them.
Also if you put free crochet amigurumi in google it will throw up loads of patterns.
Just remember to check if it's a UK or US pattern as the stitches are slightly different. Here's a conversion chart that will help http://www.yarnforward.com/crochet.html
This guide isn't mine but it may help also http://reviews.ebay.co.uk/Important-Crochet-Information-when-using-Patterns_W0QQugidZ10000000002302201QQ_trksidZp3286.c0.m17
I hope you get on well with it and enjoy it. Look forward to seeing your first finished project.

EDIT: Just to add todays free patern is an amigurumi Christmas tree http://andreasgarden.blogspot.com/2008/12/free-christmas-tree-amigurumi-pattern.html
  • I'm crocheting a hat for myself at the moment and waiting for my amigurumi book to arrive from amazon it was meant to be here for Christmas but has not turned up.
I'm not very good but really want to try the super cute amigurumi so also hoping they are not too hard.
  • Thanks for the Replys! I really cant wait to get started I have been customising clothing, shoes, jewelry etc but thats about as crafty as it gets for me! so i am hoping that I pick it up quickly and I will be sure to post some pics when i get finished! I love the crafty posts of the forum and I will be joining in on the crafty gifts for xmas 09! :p:p:p:p
  • Good luck with the amigurumi hayley! I have also been looking at the books on amazon, I can't really crochet but can knit a bit. I did crochet a scarf from a kit I was given. It wasn't that hard, I found instructions on the net and taught myself the stitches I needed for the pattern. I think I need to learn a bit more about crochet, (few more stitches etc.) then I will attempt the amigurumi! They are sooo cute aren't they?!

I've heard they are pretty easy to make btw, I think you just need to know all the basics of crochet. I used these instructions to get started, http://www.learn2knit.co.uk/crochet/crochet.php
I found them very good. I copied and pasted it all into word (and reduced the size of the pics as they were massive), then printed it all out and put in a folder. (Very MSE - I didn't want to pay for a crochet book! :D)

I found a couple of free patterns here http://www.craftbits.com/viewProject.do?projectID=2246 they're American, apparantly the worsted weight wool they use is about the same as Aran wool in the UK, so you can substitute that. That is the trouble with US patterns, you can never get the same wool as the pattern asks for.
