Staining wood

Just wondering if anyone has any tips on how to stain wood?
We have a little shoe rack that is just normal pine and would like to stain it a darker colour. The only thing I am worried about is the stain "leaking" out of the wood once its been done and going over other things.
I am sure I have seen this happen before on things that have been stained. But I could be wrong.
Also we are looking at buying a blanket box and the affordable ones on e-bay tend to be pine so I would be looking to stain that to if I could not find one the right colour.
Also want to make sure that if we put anything into the box it wont get the stain coming off on it.
Thanks for any help.

if you buy a coloured varnish there will be no prblem. most stains dont leak but either varnishing over them or using a coloureed varnish would ensure no problem and a longer life for ur wood- the varnish protects the wood. local hardware shops will advise you0

First you must be aware that staining will only darken the wood and will never make it look like a hardwood. The knots and grain will always look liked stained pine.
Varish can be used, think before you do it and get the right varnish for the finnish you want. ie gloss for a shine matt for a flat finnish and a sheen for mid range. On large areas you can get lines where the brush marks show.
To stain I was always taught paint on wipe off. This way you get a more even colour. If you use a rag sometimes you get overlap and dark lines. Also on pine you may get a black line on a end corner were the wood soaks more stain in.( It is an art) You can varnish over or wax over depending what you want
You could use Briwax , this you rub in and buff off You can get a dark one.
Go to a DIY store and take a look there is loads out there.
Whatever you do try on a piece of scra wood frst to get used to it!
Just read your post again. Check that it has not already got some finnish on it That would change what you use?The measure of love is love without measure0
