how to know what one should be paying for gas/elec

Options
having downsized to a 2bed ground floor flat from a 4 bed detached house, the cost of gas/elec (one supplier) seems excessive. Originally discovered gas meter was being read incorrectly. However, still feel that would like to know rough idea of what such accomodation should roughly cost. Asked others and feel being overcharged but how do I find out if meters are running correctly?

It's direct debit of £179 per month. That includes (they tell me) about £200 deficit to be clawed back from last year.
What I am trying to establish is a rule of thumb for consumption for a 2 bed flat. We do have lots of lights and also keep warm, but it's only a 30 year old property with double glazing and cavity wall insulation.
    Thanks

For a victorian terrace with no wall insulation and 5 bedrooms (student) it is costing us £85 for gas a month..... (£40 for electric)
