Currently Oldham is libdem and has the highest council tax in Gt Manchester.

BUT it's been the highest for years under Labour.

I'm baffled why everyone is still talking about the libdems when we've established that they're NOT the most expensive  Maybe the OP should change the title of the thread.

I don't think you are correct. Spennymoor in Sedgefield Band D Tax is £1,635.06 Richmond is £1,543.76 and Kingston is £1,579.57 or £1,602.89 with the W&PCC addition. I can't imagine that living in Richmond or Kingston is the cheepest place!

The thing is, and this is why most comparisons of "Average" Council Tax are ridiculous, is that Band D is absolute in historic value terms, whereas house prices vary hugely.

So While Sedgefield Band D may be £1635 and Richmond Band D may be £1543, if you live in a Band D in Sedgefield you're probably Lord of the Manor, whereas a Band D in Richmond is probably a medium-sized flat.

So the actual average council tax payer in Richmond probably pays closer to £2000, and in Sedgefield more like £1000. If anyone really wants, I'll get the statistics out and do the maths :)
Hurrah, now I have more thankings than postings, cheers everyone!

    In fact here we go.

In Sedgefield, 89% of properties are Band C or below, 7% are in Band D, and 4% are in Bands E and above.

In Richmond, 18% of properties are in Band C or below, 25% are in Band D, and 57% are in Bands E and above.

    So, there we are!

My guess is that marginal areas will have the lowest Council Tax. Where a seat is guaranteed there is no need to keep taxes low.

Successive governments will ensure a higher %age of local authority spending comes from central funds.

    Anybody got the stats?

    GG

On average, 2/3rds of the cash spent by local Government comes from Central Government coffers. It varies council by council. The Corporation of London will probably receive the largest grant as a proportion of spending as so few people live there and business rates are paid to central Government.
