Anyone with a Chimney cooker hood

Hope someone can help! We are wanting to buy a 60cm or 70cm stainless steel chimney cooker hood and we want to know the approximate dimensions of the chimney part (width and depth, we know the length is variable/cut to req length). Unfortunately all the manufacturers specifications we have managed to look at only have the dimensions of the whole unit. Could someone out there please measure theirs for us (and tell us the brand/model they have)?

The reason I'm asking is that there is currently an expelair extractor on the wall above the cooker and we want to ensure that if we replace it with a chimney style cooker hood that the chimney part will cover the existing hole(which will be used to vent it to the outside), otherwise it's a bigger job than we envisaged.

Many thanks

    hi there,
we have a 90cm belling something or other, (i can root out model no if req'd.)
width of chimney part is approx 285mm and depth is approx 295mm.
however you must remember you can,t vent out anywhere behind the chimney as it is full of gubbins.

    hope this helps.

Sorry not been on the computer. Can you explain what you mean by

We were thinking that the chimney part would hide the extraction duct which would then just vent through the existing hole in the wall. If you can't vent out from behind the chimney where do you vent out?
    Thanks.

i have one can measure it if you want, our flexi pipe goes into loft and vent put in wall going outside took fitter ages to drill thru wall for hole
Live in my shoes for a week, then tell me your lifes hard!
  • I have a Howdens 60cm wide chimney extractor. The width of the chimney bit is 19cm, depth 18cm.
It replaced a conventional cooker hood extractor which had a much wider vent to the outside wall. the fitter packed the old hole with something and smoothed over it, nobody but me knows it's there.
A chimney extractor has to vent up through the ceiling, then curve its way towards on outside wall, where the metal grille will be fitted. If yours is going on an outside wall, it will simply be vented through the ceiling space to the outside brickwork. You knock out the required hole in the bricks and stick the grille over the top.
Sounds easy - mine was fitted no bother and was a similar situation to yours with the old xpelair.

its going to depend on the height of your xpelair and how high you mount the hood. the higher the xpelair, if your xpelair is at a height that that will only just be above the hood part you will struggle.

if its helpful i can post pic of ours with covers removed and some dimensions.

I'm hoping we might get away with it then. The expelair is set 6" below the ceiling. We really don't want to have to be making a new hole in the wall and filling the existing one in.
A picture and dimensions would be very helpful Bockster thank you

I just fitted a stoves cooker hood. I haven't got the measurements, but I made the hole in the wall inside the chimney, about a foot from the ceiling. It was a full brick vent, and took 204mm x 60 ducting. If the hole was higher it would have been fine as the chimney part was adjustable to fit the gap from the hood to the ceiling.

6" below ceiling should be fine. here (hopefully) is pic anyway showing gubbins if your hole is too low.......

dammit can't atatch pic direct, has to be web hosted.

pm me if you want me to email pics.

    dims are;-
top of woktop is 915mm from floor
top of w/top to bottom of hood is 795mm
top of w/top to min centre of hole is 1240mm approx (assuming 100mm ish hole ie what i'd call normal ducting)

    hope this makes sense.

Thanks Bockster, you've been very helpful. I don't think I will need a pic now but thanks for the offer. I reckon that the existing hole will be fine for a new extractor.
