A Family New Year

Hi there,

advice would be appreciated, for the first time this year OH's family and mine will be together over new year. I'm struggling to think of things to do on new year's night for a variety of ages, drinkers and non-drinkers that don't cost a fortune.

Normally we would just go to the pub with friends so this will be a different one for us.

Any ideas?
Thanks for the advice Martin! :money:

Play the Cornflake box game, where you place it on the ground (just the cardboard box), then have to pick it up with your teeth, whilst having only your feet on the floor (no knees or hands on the floor!). After each round, you cut an inch off it, and go again. If you can't bend over far enough to pick it up, you're out! Keep cutting an inch off until you have a winner. This game is great for kids, as they're often a lot more flexible than adults, so will end up winning!

    Jenga?

    Team games like charades?
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
  • Why don't you ask everyone what they would like to do?
Tell them you are trying to think of games etc to keep everyone amused.
Ask them to tell you three games that they would like to play then the ones with the most votes happen. You will probably find that there are so many duplicates.
Or you could do team events. Split everyone into two teams and have different things to do. It could be like a relay race where the team picks which person does what. Everyone has to do one thing without knowing what the games are. You could do it as points and the winning team is the one with the most points.

You could play bingo (points for the team that gets 1 line, 2 lines, full house), charades, pictionary, jenga, twister, treasure hunt (with clues that the team has to work out and then send the youngest member to find) print out some quiz sheets off the internet (sudoko, wordsearch etc)

Have fun, sounds fantastic. Think I might suggest the same for my family.

We had the wii out last new years eve - great for young and old. If you don't have one you could ask if anyone coming does or see if you can borrow one for the night from someone that is going out. It was fab we were 10 pin bowling into the early hours
  • We have a game that my family has played for years. Before everyone arrives hide 20 objects around the house in really strange places. As an example: a tomato can be hung on the tree with some cotton and looks like a bauble.
Give everyone a list with all the objects on and they have to find them without giving away the hiding places. First one to find them all wins a small prize. Has kept people at our family parties entertained for ages.
  • It's worth having a few different games around. What about card games too? Poker with chocolate coins for money?
  • You could do an Ask the Family Quiz of the Year.

Make up loads of question , some just for the kids to answer, some for mums etc. All to do with the past year.
  • Buy a murder mystery game - like a 'who's done it' - great for all ages and they even dress up too to be like each person they will be playing - great fun!

Happy New Year when it comes
When you were born, you were crying and everyone around was smiling. Live your life so at the end, you're the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying! :rotfl:
