solid beech worktops?

I am planning a new kitchen. I like the look of the white shaker kitchen by Howdens. Does anyone know the advantages and disadvantages of solid beech worktops?

Thanks

    there look fantastic when new.....but

you have to look after them, there not like a laminate where you can clean tommorow

amount of kitchens we have installed with solid wood, routred to perfection, spending hours sanding perfect, 6 coats of danish oil, only to return 3 weeks later to find grease, water and food debris stains

if you accept that there need cleaning, regular oiling then go for it, if you have a family and need a worktop that needs to be a little more hardwearing then you need a laminate or natural stone

We have had solid beech tops for almost 21 years in our present kitchen. They still look good. You do need to look after them, wipe up water, not let it lie, don't leave wet pots on them. But damage and stains can be sanded out and the tops refinished. The amount of wear and care will determine how often you need to do this.
