Hope so! For the future, I'd avoid storage heaters if you move house. Meanwhile, enjoy what you have - especially your children being little. Before you know it, they'll be sitting in front of a TV and xbox all evening with ipod, phone, psp etc charging wearing summer clothes in December and moaning that they're cold.

Do some sums on paper and consider your options. Just don't borrow your way out or ignore it thinking, it's winter, we'll sort it in the summer when the heating's off! Look at where you spend money every month and wouldn't miss it. Hope you get it all sorted and enjoy Christmas. x
  • Sorry Nemesis, I don't think I have been rude at all, yes I appreciate that the OP is only spending £20 a month on Sky but if he is in such a tight financial situation now that he can't afford the necessary increase to pay for his energy bills there really is no alternative.

And no, I don't spend all day texting my friends on my mobile, I have 2 young children myself and can honestly say I have never needed a mobile for emergencies with them!

At the end of the day, it all comes down to priorities whether we like it or not, the harsh reality is we all only have a fixed budget and out of that we have to prioritise what we can pay for and what we can't, a few months ago we had to get rid of sky because things were so tight and we had more urgent bills to pay, these are the things you have to do if you take responsibility for looking after your family.

I think most of the replies on here are helpful, fair enough they may not have been put across in the most mollycoddling manner but the OP is going to end up with a serious energy debt if he is not careful so action has to be taken

yes but everyone on here is an individual with indiviual needs and situations. so you have two young kids and you have been fortunate enough not to need a phone in an emergency. good. hope that continues.

but we do not know the op situation and we will not find out now to see if we could have suggested help in other ways because certain answers have been judgemental and not very polite.

you cannot assume everyone has the same situation, just because you can do without your mobile phone, it does not mean "so must everyone else".

and it is not a case of mollycoddling the op, it is about being helpful without spite or judgement or criticism when advice is asked for. constructive advice not destructive advice.

I side with milliemonster on the general principle here.

The OP, in essence, states he/she is having financial problems and cannot afford to pay her Utility bill and volunteers the fact that he/she has a mobile phone contract, Sky and Broadband; and, importantly asks for advice.

Surely it is valid to suggest that Sky, mobile phone and Broadband are not essential?

Incidentally this whole 'mobile is required for emergencies' justification is IMO simply an excuse. If you want a mobile and can afford one - get one.

Ten years ago, I doubt if 1% had a mobile, now every kid from 8 upwards has to have one in 'case they are attacked by a paedophile.- - who would of course wait until their victim had used their phone before attacking!

A mobile phone FOR EMERGENCIES has a capital cost of 15 or £20 (or £0 if you bum an old one from a friend) and an ongoing cost of five or sixpence per six months to keep them activated. They do not cost a tenner a month. If they do, they are not being used for emergencies.
