Recommended white undercoat/basecoat paint?

Hi All,

Can anyone recommend a undercoat brand of paint? I need to paint two large rooms and have previously use the Dulux brand for a small room. However, this brand is too expensive for large rooms.

What do the trades use?

Thanks,
Pete.

I've used B&Q water based white primer/undercoat all through, the interior here. It worked well with the water based satin topcoat.

So much easier than the Dulux oil based stuff.

If that's the 'low smell' stuff, it was really hard work, wasn't white compared to the really good to use Focus own label brand & used more to cover.

  • I swear by Glidden Primer/Undercoat which you can buy from Dulux Decorator Centres, it is water based, dries really fast and ideal for woodwork.

if its for plaster you would have to use one of the other Glidden products i.e matt, silk, acrylic eggshell etc

Glidden is cheaper than Dulux but same company.

    Drat !

I was going to say this, i have used this recently as it is really cheap and does a great job.

It is not the low odur stuff and i have had no issues with it, have even mixed it with a dulux pink with no problems !!
  • Following advice from someone in the trade some years ago, I always use my local Johnstones/Leyland trade centre - if you are unsure about what covers what, you can call their technical services line. Dulux also have trade centres you can go to but I don't know how much cheaper these are than what you buy in the DIY sheds.
