Want so see a GP for a check up

I have not been to see a GP for a routine exam for 15 years.

My last GP was at uni, and I was advised to join a local practice.

How does one join a GP practice? Is it like a dental practice.

What about my records? Do I need to bring anything like my driving license or passport or utility bill?

Thanks

You should look in the phone book for a GP (or you may already know of one in your area) practice that serves your area. Phone or call in and ask to join their practice, they will tell you if they need any documentation from you etc.

  • Normally you just pop in your nearest GP and ask to join. They will give you a form to fill an and book you an appointment with the practice nurse. They will tell you what ID to bring in (to the appointment) and will probably ask you to bring a urine sample too!
A waist is a terrible thing to mind.

pu your postcode in & it will tell you the nearest practices.

Ring to find out when they register & which cover your address & pop in to have a look if you have more than one to choose from.

You will need: passport / proof of who you are; bill/ bank statement showing your address; your NHS number (or if you don't have it, the name & address of your old practice) so that they can track down your old records & get them delivered.

Some practices have no set registration tiems, you just pop in & fill out the GMS1 form, others will do afternoons & some will do 4.15-4.25pm on alternating Tuesdays and Saturdays. It will depend on the practice itself.

if you have any problems or questions, ring your PCT's PALS team (find out through the https://www.nhs.uk website) and they will be able to point you in the right direction.

If you find a practice that's open on Saturdays, sign up quickly! Saturday surgeries are long gone in our area.

    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Many GPs are introducing extended hours - so either some days they stay later (till 7pm ish) or Saturday am. It depends on the size of the practice & which they have gone for.

Ask your practice which they are implementing.

I manage a GP surgery in the Wigan area and we are open for appointments every Saturday and 2 evenings a week until 7.30pm. Some practices will have a website where you can pre-register - if you live in the North West I can recommend some good surgeries. :j
