second chance offers

Is a second chance offer safe as bidding on items, its just i bid on an item and did not care if i won or not and have been contacted with a second chance offer, now that i have been offered this may take the offer up,but i have not really taken up a second chance offer before.
It maybe that the seller was trying to push the price up and i was next bidder and now offers me or it could be that just the seller has more than one or maybe the high bidder changed there mine.
As i said i did not car if i won and was not going to pay or bid anymore than i bid so when i checked i did not win,but now that i have not i see i have been offered one now.
What im not sure of is i was the third highest bidder or third on bidding list and i find it weird that seller would offer me the item and not the next one up,maybe the next one up did get offered and refused but its been to quick, maybe the seller has more than three, but i find this hard.
The seller did have it on auction about 3 times the price on buy it now but nobody wanted to pay that and now i am being offered one.
What should i do,paypal is a payment required so really should be no problems but i just find this hard to beleive.
Any advise would be cool.

The seller will have more than one item, thats all.
It's all above board, and you will still be able to leave each others feedback.0 -
There is a lot of dodgey sellers who use a proxy sniper site to bid up their items, ebay is a good site so long as You avoid the sharks0

It could be the seller has more than one item and thinks your bid is high enough to offer it for sale to you.
It could be the winning bidder failed to purchase the tiem for wahetver reason, so its offered to you to save the seller from relisting it.
It could be the seller trying to push up the bid using another account and pushed it a bit to far, so now is offering to the genuine bidders.
Either way.....buring from a second chance offer is just the same as winning an auction. You get the same protection and get to leave/recieve feedback.0 -

The only thing wrong with this is certain sellers use bidders(thier mates) and sniper sites to take the bids to there maximum then offer it to the only genuine bidder0 -

Ah. That's a good idea. I never thought of that.
I've often had more than one item and offer it to other bidders BUT ONLY THOSE WHO BID HIGH.
Whether you buy or not will depend on how badly you want the item.Small change can often be found under seat cushions.

I think all you can do as the buyer is to forget the reasons behind it, because it could be a legitimate offer, or it could be that the seller has artificially raised the price. If they have hidden their tracks well, there is probably no way of knowing.
Just say to yourself, "Do I want this item now without the hassle of bidding for it on a different auction (or having to wait for another auction to come up, if it is a rare item)?", and "Am I willing to pay that amount for the item?". If the answer is yes to both those questions, then go ahead and buy it.0 -
I agree with nightswimmer that you shouldn't worry about the reasons behind the offer. I also wouldn't read anything into the fact that the seller is offering it to you when you were only the third highest bidder. As a seller, I've tried using second chance offer a few times and nobody has ever taken me up on it - I think people just lose enthusiasm for the item once the auction is over - so a couple of times I've sent second chance offers to the third highest bidder, just to try and avoid the hassle of relisting.0

this happened to me a while back, and i went on to his "other items for sale" & saw he had loads of them for sale, so i declined the second chance offer and bid on one of the other ones instead. ended up winning the item at half the price i'd bid up to on the first one!
hope this makes sense, if you know what i mean!
