I am so cross with the post office I can't even begin to describe how useless they have been.
On the 23rd May my husband took out a car insurance policy (£440 something a year) for a car we have bought (with the intention of selling it soon) and paid £92 initial payment. As yet he has still not received the policy document, which has meant we have had to declare it SORN because we can't get it taxed. He phoned last week and the week before and on both occasions was told that the documents are in the post. He called again today after we received a letter in the post which stated "As you have now received the policy documents you need to send us your no claims bonus certificate and car alarm documents". He called to complain because we have no no-claims bonus and the car is only fitted with a standard immobiliser and we still haven't received the policy documents. Because of the no no-claims and alarm were then told that the premium is now going to go up. How can they put the premium up when we have paid the first payment and they got it wrong in the first place? My husband then said that he wanted to cancel the policy because we are paying for something that we can't use and this has caused us a lot of wasted time, we were then told "this is the procedure, you can't cancel".
Surely this isn't right. I've tried to look up the FSA regulations but I can't find anything. How long do we have to cancel and can we get our money back?
Any advice would be gratefully received.

Hiya,
Call 0800 169 6500, choose option 1 for home insurance (trust me!!!)
Then press option 1 for existing customers.
Firstly: You CAN cancel the policy. During the first 14 days there is no charge apart from for the tiome you have been covered.
Outside of that there is a £35 fee and short term rates. But you CAN cancel. Well, your husband can cancel - they DO need to speak to him.
Secondly: You need to tell the advisor what has happened, as you should have been offered the option for the docs to be sent special delivery at some stage, which you haven't.
Thirdly: You need to ask that the sales call is listened to, as if you were mis-sold the policy re the no claims discount and immobiliser , they may have to waiver the cancellation fees.
Fourthly: If you get an advisor who cannot understand this, ask to speak to a team leader. Refuse to leave the phone until they agree to call you back.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. im sure with financial products you have a 14 day cooling off period..this applies with loans...long distance selling...etc
get in there quick and confirm your cancellation with a new advisor..and send something in writing to confirm.0 -
yeah you should have a cancelation period - you should receive some paperwork at least informing you of this0

thank you for replying. We didn't know how long the cooling off period was becuse they never sent us any documents. I will try and call them ASAP. I think the 14 days may be over but we will contest that if we didn't receive the information, how could we change our minds?Total Debt November 2016 =£9,660.52

Should have 14 days from receiving the documents! However they can still make a charge under FSA regulations. Looks like impy works for BISL so I think you should follow their advice.0

Another way to save more on car insurance and home insurance is to go through the site top cashback as currently lloydstsb are given away a referral fee of £90 for car insurance and £60 for home insurance for every policy you take out for this link, i recently did the home insurance myself, and all it cost me for £40,000 of cover was £11.17 after taking the referral into account, AMAZING!! Dont know how they can afford to do this.

You are not alone.
The post office is one of many companies trading under the company NIG. They do tend to come out cheaper on the searches, but are hideous people to deal with.
I had a similar problem. I found SWINTON (NIG in disguise) the cheapest for my missus this year. £121 fully comp on her fiesta. I agreed over the phone and within 3 days had the policy docs.
I noticed on the docs they had quoted for a 1.1l and not a 1.3l. When I called them they put the price up by £50 for the extra 200cc. I cancelled and they told me I would have to pay the cancellation fee of £30 ish.
I complained and stated about the 14 day cooling off as I was sold the deal over the phone.
I was then told that this did not apply in this case.
We had a battle over several days.
I won in the end because on the tapes used to record my original call, the chap clearly said, I could have a full refund, no penalties.
I would say Avoid NIG , they may be the cheapest, but they are difficult to deal with. I would hate to make a claim!!!!!
I don't know about your case, but if the quote was voice recorded, did you remember what was said?NO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!0 -

Post Office are not part of NIG, post office are part of BISL, who own - Budget, Dial Direct, Marks and Spencer, and Homebase Insurance.
NIG are one of the underwriters on our panel, but we are in no way part of the NIG group and our terms and conditions re cooling off periods are decided by BISL, not the underwriters.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature.
