Woodburning stove recommendation please

I am in the process of buying a house with a bit of land in the sticks and am planning to go as carbon neutral as possible by coppicing my own wood supply, I want to buy (and install myself) a woodburning stove thats capable of heating a main room plus a back boiler for hot water and possibly heat some radiators in other rooms (max 3 rooms). Ive had a look on the internet but am having trouble finding any what I would call 'decent quality stoves' at reasonable prices that are going to last the distance.
My Budget is around £500 but most of the ones I have found seem to be Chinese imports and even then there seems to be a waiting list of several months and winters approaching fast!
Thanks for any advice.

Slightly above your budget, but these are really great BRITISH (Devon) made cast iron stoves. Had one in my old house, moved, and had no hesitation in having a second. We bought both of ours from Mole Valley Farmers in Devon ( a kinda farmers superstore but open to all) which were slightly cheaper -so if you live in or around Devon / Cornwall defiantly worth a look.

Unless you know for sure, Archairsupervisor, that the imports are inferior, no reason why they shouldn't be considered.
If they are competively priced this is because of cheaper labour, needs to be checked out.
I well remember Japanese cars first coming to this country, a real hate campaign was started, yet they lasted twice as long as British cars. Better made, better designed.0 -
Ask to see CIPHE (Chartered Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineering)0

I bought a very cheap 8KW multifuel stove off ebay a couple of years ago - undoubtedly chinese and it is one of the best purchases that I've ever made.
Providing you don't go mad with the fuel and stay within the recommended output then the cast iron will last. I paid £150 and did see similar stoves (Harvester/cottager) on sale on ebay recently.
I have also just bought a hunter herald 14 multifiuel stove complete with free flue and £25 register plate plus free delivery for £760 from from www.firesonline.co.uk. This seems to be a very competative place, beating other suppliers by a couple of hundred quid.
Good luck with your purchase0 -
We ended up buying a stove from www.greymetal.co.uk.
The German styling may not to be to everyone's taste, but it's fantastically efficient, and it's way cheaper than the British stuff.
You're right to avoid the Chinese stuff, the cast iron plates are ill fitting and the gaps are filled with cement, or sometinmes nothing at all. The cement will crack as soon as you use it, which reduces the efficiency drastically. You will even see these being used in peoples' houses with the doors open to try and get some heat out of them. They are a joke.
Until you've actually used a modern European steel stove you can't appreciate the difference.0 -
thanks for the link scumfrog, I am looking for a stove and these prices seem very reasonable. Has anyone had any experience with this company?0

I don't need a stove, but that site has some useful information on it, and the stoves look interesting. I like the ones with the ovens built on top. When I was looking the only one I saw like that was Italian and very expensive!Debbie0 -

Hi
I would use this company, FIRESONLINE, as they are the cheapest on the internet and have good customer services.
I originally used Stoves Are Us who told me they had a certain model in stock over the telephone, so i bought it on their site. They charged me for it, then emailed me to say that it was not in stock and then when i complained they told me they could refund me, but by law they had 14 days. Hence, my card was blocked by £900 for 4 days and on the telephone they were very curt and unfriendly merely stating that they had 14 days by law!!
Anyhow Fires On Line were alot cheaper than them0
