Moved out but being asked to pay

Hi

We moved out of our mortgaged property in May after going bankrupt. I contact the Elec/Gas supplier cancelling our contact.

I was on a tarriff that had a daily charge as well as a usage charge.

They have just written to my saying that as the current owner I'm responable for paying the usage charge (there is none) and the standing charges.

Would I still be liable to pay as I've cancelled the contract? Iam unsure if the bank have taken back possession of our property.

You need to find out who owns the property - if you still do, there will be more bills than this to sort out eg. who is paying the insurance on the property?

If it's not your property, inform the energy company who is chasing you.

It might depend on if the bank has sold the property. In terms of your mortgage you are liable until the point it is sold when they can calculate the final amount due on the property. Therefore if they never transfer ownership into their name the bill still sits with you would be my view.

You could in the interim do as I did when my mother died, change to a no standing charge tariff, thus nil charge for both until it is sorted

As a bankrupt can you legally just tell them to "get in the queue" for their money?
