Only if you buy 3 bottles which are all the same price - as the 3 for 2 is the cheapest one free. The 40% off is a great deal because you can go in for just 1 bottle and still get 40% off or you can get a cheap red for mulled wine and and a more expensive wine for dinner and still get 40% off each bottle. The 3 for 2 is less than 33% off overall if you mix and match different priced wines especialy if one of your bottles is much cheaper than the other 2.

Agreed it's not much of a deal except that it allows you to buy one bottle. Their high prices are all pitched around 3 for the price of two so 3 £7 bottles would come out at £4.66 a bottle using this voucher gets you a single bottle for £4.20. Far better prices and greater choice at Asda, Tesco and Waitrose

Not sure about that - for example Ken Forrester Chenin Blanc:
    Waitrose: £7.99
    Tesco: £6.99
    Threshers/Wine Rack: £5.99
    Threshers/Wine Rack @ 40% off: £3.59

    St Hallett Poachers Blend:
    Waitrose: £7.99
Tesco: don't know instore price but on offer on their wine site at £5.69 per bottle but only if you buy a case of 6
    Threshers/Wine Rack: £7.99
    Threshers/Wine Rack @ 40% off: £4.79

And at Threshers/WR the Vineyard X Granacha is a bargain at £2.99 (after discount) although Tesco do a reasonable Spanish Garnacha for around £3.30.

While I agree that some prices are too high to allow for the permanent 3 for 2 offer and overall the range is not great but if you are selective there are some great bargains to be had at 40% off.

Don't know Asda as there is not one near me but Tesco has far too many dull big name brand wines and far too many half price 'offers' on wine which is only really worth half the 'original/rrp' price anyway. Their own brand Finest Fiano is good though. Waitrose used to be the best of the supermarkets for wine (and probably still is) although M&S is also good.

My local Threshers have a very limited choice compared with the main supermarkets - they also have parking issues and can often be shut due to "staff shortages" - more often than not there is only one person working in the shop
  • Yes, they do vary - the Wine Rack 5 minutes walk from me is big and has great staff, the one 10 minutes further along the road also has great staff but it's tiny - about a third of the size, hence limited selection. Not sure why but all 3 Threshers near me changed to Wine Rack a while ago - still identical inside though except the biggest one now put almost all their white wine in fridges (which are far too cold), useful if you are on the way to a friend /party I suppose.

Interesting one tiny one recently rebranded as Wine Rack and 1 tiny + 2 bigger ones near me still Threshers

I picked up their price list when I was in yesterday and according to that it's £33.99 at full price which is £20.39 with the 40% discount.

They also have a GH Mumm (non vintage) for slightly less - £31.99 full price = £19.19 with 40% off.

By the way, their (free) Autumn/Winter price list has 3 vouchers at the back for £5 off a £30 spend which ARE valid with the 3 for 2 offer. One is valid now (Nov) and the other 2 in January 09. So in theory you could get 50% off wine if you bought 3 bottles at £10 each. The discount is deducted from the 2 charged for bottles, so that would be £5 off £20 = £15 which is £5 per bottle for 3 '£10' bottles of wine! Note that almost all their prices end in 99p so you might need to get 2 at £9.99 and 1 at £10.99 (which gives an average price per bottle of £5.33, still almost 50% off) and also the range at that price is quite small but hopefully there are one or two decent ones in there (more likely at this price range).

  • Hi

I've just been in to the Wine rack shop to use my 40% off voucher. Also picked up a copy of their magazine 'The Wine Rack' (autumn/winter 08) and inside the back page there are also £5 off vouchers if you spend £30 or over on wine and champagne. I understand they can be used in conjunction with the 40% off voucher. So another wee bargain there.

hope this is of use to someone
