home highlights-are they any good?

cant afford to have my hair highlighted at hairdressers so have looked at boots and the kits they have available. The one I saw-maybe l'oreal but cant be sure- had a cap and a hook which you hook the strands through like I used to have done years ago at hairdressers but are they any good? I read the instuctions and it said make sure you dont make the hole in the cap too big as the hair dye will flow through and presumably you will end up with blotchy highlights! any one tried it and are they easy? good? bad? I have blonde to light brown hair and just want to put some life back in it without having to have an all over colour

its hard to do on your own, get a friend round to help my sisters a hairdresser (trainee) and she does all her mates high lites this way its the cheaper alt and works just fine.:cool:0

I agree.. very difficult to do even with a friend (in my experience). I've even used different kits & have never been impressed with the results.
Fingers crossed you have better luck0 -
Why don't you get it done by trainees? I got mine coloured for £5 and cut at the same time for free. That's cheaper than buying a kit, and the person doing it will be either trained or almost trained, and will be supervised.0

I have never had any problems with home highlightening kits. Follow the instructions (I tend to leave the bleach on for about 5 mins less than they say).
As the other posters have said you do need help from someone else. My husband has done mine in the past, this time my step daughter helped me.
Did my highlights last week before I went really shot and even the hairdresser said we had done a good job.
The only time I have had highlights done was when I was a teenager (a very long time ago), they used a rubber cap and it was so painful I have done my own highlights and full head colours since.
Make sure you get the best you can afford, don't go for the cheapo ones, especially when you are using bleach.
And be prepared for the smell, keep the windows open. And try not to lean back on anything, especially your favourite cardigan like I did last week lol.0 -
My hair went orange when i tried it :S0

They don't do it with the cap really anymore, they use foils. (which aren't painful at all).
I would rather get it done by the professionals for cheaper than the kit!0 -
I've used Smart Colour highlights a few years ago and they turned out lovely, although it's quite tricky to do yourself so get a friend to help!Owing to financial constraints, the light at the end of the tunnel has been switched off until further notice.
Illegitimi Non Carborundum!!!:cool:0
