Tax credits dispute

I like lots of others have been told that i have been overpayed by quite a large amount. I have appealed this but each letter i get says different amounts and even though I see myself as fairly intelligent, am completly confused! One letter I had from them even had spaces in it where they had obviously sent me a computer generated letter but had forgotten to fill in the blanks! On more than one occasion I have been told that I will hear from them by a certain date but hear nothing for months. I havent kept my award notices for 2004 which is when they say the overpayment dispute began. Where do I stand with this and what can I do. Any advice gratefully received!
