Gas bill - is this good or bad??

We moved into this property in July. We have just finally (after calling and asking for it due to a mix up) gotten our first gas bill - it covers from end of July through last week. £122. Now we run our heater a lot (gas) as we have toddlers in the house - one of which seems perpetually cold. We had electric heater in our old property so no idea if this is good or bad for a gas bill for around 4 months.

To get a good response you are better off posting the units used or kwh figures as £s dont mean a lot because it depends of price per unit etc.

206 gas units over 146 days. or 2298.71 kWh used. God I hope that's not horrendously excessive. This is for a 3 bedroom semidetached with gas central heating.

Not sure about the consumption but if you paid £122 for 2298 kwh of gas then I would suggest you look to switch to a more competitively priced energy supplier/ tariff. With a flat rate supplier like Ebico that would have cost less than £80 (they raised their prices in October). And I'm not saying Ebico would be the cheapest, either...

Ah, we're with British Gas. It was Npower here when we moved and we HATED dealing with them (STILL having issues with them, but that's just them). It took ages to get the switchover and was such a hassle (plus DH has been British Gas customer forever), it might take some work to get him to switch again. I'll have to compare other companies and see what's available and what the rate difference would be. If it is loads cheaper, he'll be agreeable. Thanks for the info.

I am mostly at this point concerned about consumption with winter just starting. But once I've determined consumption levels then I'll look at comparing other companies.

Your consumption seems fine - so long as it's an actual reading and not estimated.

You are quite right to be concerned with consumption in Winter.

According to a recent report by the health protection agency, whilst new cases in the UK are still too high, the numbers are beginning to peak.

I had to read this a few times and even then I've probably got this wrong. Are you assuming the OP meant the disease consumption as opposed to what I believe he/she meant, i'.e the units of gas used?:D

PS Or were you being fashionably sarcastisc and I've fell for it hook, line and sinker? :o :rotfl:

If you are staying with BG make sure you are not on there standard tarrif. the best they do is click energy 6.

I would say we are probably on the standard tarif. I will go look on their website to see what this "click energy 6" is, as I'm not familiar with it.

And that was an actual reading, not estimated.

I was going to just let that whole disease consumption comment go, as I was reasonably convinced it was tongue-in-cheek.

  • If you are worried about you heating bills try other options to keep your bills down.

How insulated is the house? You may be able to get some insulation from goverment grants, also you can do things like having thick curtains at the window and draw them as it starts to get dark (just watch you don't cover any radiators), as even double glazing lets heat out, so an extra thick layer will help.
You can also get special foil to put behind any radiators on outside walls so that heat is reflected back in. Make sure your boiler has been serviced and if your cold room is a bedroom use a hot water bottle at night and extra blankets.

Toddlers can be stronger than we think, we often over heat our houses but remember they run around lots and make their own warmth at times, just keep extra throws about for the sleepy times during the day or TV/story times.

Hope this all helps you, and keep an eye on your bills if your paying by DD as British Gas don't review DD's for the first 12 months so if it works out that your not paying enough to cover the bill, phone them and ask them to change it.
