Bike Misery

We bought a bike for son from the catalogue, and due to storage space we decided to assemble it Christmas Eve. So yesterday we began the task, within 10 mins it broke, due to poor workmanship.
So we had to dash to Asda and buy one a 4pm before it shuts as it was his main present. We also had to borrow the £100 for it.
The bike from the cat was £70. Do you think they should help out? as a gesture of goodwill or something

You should be able to get your money back under the sale of goods act, not fit for the purpose.0

Depending on the fault you would expect the catalogue to put you in contact with the manufacturer to get a replacement part (I know there was a contact number in the manual for the last bike I bought). Alternatively you could try sending it back and asking for a refund (or a credit) - depends on when you bought it. Given your scenario it should be easy to provde it has not been used (the tyres will be brand new).
I will warn you though about a situation that happened with one of our neighbours. He had bought a bike for one of his kids and had asked me to help him to put it together, he then decided to take it for a test ride (as a bit of a laugh) and managed to bend the frame and one of the wheels .. he did not get his money back - hence why I said at the start 'depending on the fault'.

Thanks for your replies. The fault was in the bolt that clips the seat onto the frame. There was only a tiny bit of soldered metal on, and when we tightened it, it snapped off. We are going to ring them in the morning, so I will let you know.
(we havent paid for the item yet, as it is on a 3 month interest free plan and we have only paid one months, so we must have had it 4 weeks or so)0
