Item Not Recieved by Buyer... Advice?

Hi All

Newbie here but long time Ebayer.

I've recently sent an item to Singapore and the seller has filed a complaint at Paypal about the goods not being received. The buyer was offered postage via airmail small packets which he accepted and did not ask for any form of tracking service.

Paypal have emailed me to say that as part of my usage agreement in using their service I must use some form of tracking service when sending items. I was not aware of this.

Does anyone know where I stand. I do have the post office reciept somwhere but this does not have a tracking number. Also can I claim against the Post Office.

Maybe I've been lucky but this is the first time since I joined Ebay in 1999 that this has happened. All my other auctions that were posted at the same time have all turned up at their international destinations.

Thanks in advance for any help. Needless to say I'm very frustrated with this.

  • As a seller, I always make sure I choose a postal method that provides sufficient insurance on the value of the item.

Maybe put this one down to experience and take the hit?

Unfortunately this time of year stuff goes missing alot. Ive had two items go missing myself. For this reason i now always get a proof of posting then you can claim later on. As vish says, put this one down to experience and next time get that proof of posting. :)

    Thanks for the replies.

Must admit i'm kicking myself I didn't get it. As you say it looks like I'll have to take the hit on this one. I take it I can't claim against the PO even though I do have a receipt.

With regards to proof of posting I have noticed that sometimes the clerk will write the address on the reciept and sometimes they don't. This is without being asked to do it. Is that the proof of posting or is it an additional charge?
I only ask this as normally if an item is over £10 in value I normally make a buyer take recorded delivery to make sure it gets there. Although there are times that people do not want to pay that additional 65p.

I think I may need to get re-aquainted with the Post Office services again.

    Thanks Again

only AIRSURE provides sufficient proof for paypal (and that only covers 29 countries, i don't think singapore is one of them)

unfortunatley, paypal will ALWAYS side with the buyer if you can't prove its delivered with a valid tracking number :-(

insurance is there for YOU, not the buyer!

Yes you can claim against the post office. I'm assuming you sent it surface mail (there are other articles on their website for other posting methods), this is an excerpt from royal mail website

    * Postage includes compensation cover of up to £30 for loss and damage. Additional compensation cover is available for more valuable items by using International Signed For®

    Product instructions

You can send Surface mail from any Post Office™ branch. Just prepare and label your letter, packet or parcel and ask for Surface mail to your destination (please note; letters can only sent by Surface mail to destinations outside of Europe). Don't forget to ask for a free certificate of posting too: you'll need this if you make a claim for compensation.

I would personally refund the buyer their monies and make the claim, hope this helps :)

And for all the countries which it doesn't include in Airsure you can send them International Signed For which provides the same service as Airsure but does usually take a little longer.

nope, International signed for ONLY provides proof of postage, NOT proof of receipt which is what paypal wants.
thats why it's cheaper, Royal mail only tracks it till it leaves the country, after then it's untrackable.
you CAN request a copy of the signature that takes a couple of weeks and costs you extra money, that is NOT good enough for paypal!

    Thanks :rudolf:
  • Even is item is going abroad you can claim if it doesn't arrive with a normal receipt, the printed one from the tills if you don't have a proof of postage is sufficent but only if the item is valued at £30 or less.
