Post office gripes

Well aware of the last posting dates for Xmas mail, I went to our local post office on Friday afternoon with my parcels, only to find it closed 50 minutes before the ususal time.
No notice about the early closure and the people in the shop (same premises) said they couldn't help and didn't know it was even closed. After all, the 2 counters were more than 10 feet away from each other.
Back to the same place on Saturday morning, and the assistant said I should have posted the items earlier, 'cos they couldn't guarantee delivery in time for Xmas. Gritted my teeth and said that they were unexpectedly closed the day before - to be told the computers were down! Decided to exercise restraint, but wondered why a notice couldn't have been hand written to say what the problem was (assuming that the staff could write and not rely on a word processor). :silenced:
Got my parcels sorted and then requested some stamps (for other items at home). Was then told that they might not have what I needed and there was a shortage of stamps in all post offices, so no point in trying elsewhere. :wall:
I must have looked confused, as I was then told that all stamps come from Hemel Hampstead and the fire last weekend had halted supplies.
Is this a BR-type leaves on the line excuse? Is there only one storage place for all stamps sold in post offices in the UK? Or does holding up the mail near Xmas help the Royal Mail achieve their targets so that the executives can get big bonuses again?
