Best way of transferring money overseas without foreign bank account?

I am currently abroad and now need to transfer from the UK fairly urgently. I would appreciate any advice on the best Moneysaving way of doing this. As I haven't opened up an account over here abroad yet, would something like using a money transfer service like Western Union be cost effective?
I suspect opening up an account here would be best, where I could have a sterling account and then get the benefit of a better exchange rate with the pound over here. That could take some time to sort out, though, so should I just get some money out with my credit card in the mean time, or should I go via, say, Western Union.
Many thanks for any replies.

How do you intend to get the money from your UK account?
ATM is likely to restrict you to a maximum of £200-£500 per day and the rate will not be that great and charges involved.
Even using a debit card - will Western Union let you use a debit card? will be expensive.
To me you need a mechanism of getting money out of a UK account to a foreign one - most banks will want a written request and if for a large amount will need confirmation of your ID before processing a payment.0 -
