Redundant in a few weeks, will I have to pay my rent after I finish?

I am getting made redundant on the 31/10/2008 (My 40th birthday..cheers ISoft!)
My question is this, I get paid on the 29/10/08 and I assume this is for the time I have worked in October as when I 1st started on the 21/05/2001, I got paid for those 10 days at the end of May. Will I have to pay my November rent out of my final months' pay or will that be covered by housing benefit?

Thanks for any replies.

You will have to pay your rent at all times. That is your responsibility.
When you finish your job you should phone the benefits office straight away and make an appointment. They will send you out forms to fill in and make an appointment for you to take the forms in. Any claim that is due will start 3 days after the day you phoned them.

If you are to be awarded housing benefit, which is now known as Local Housing Allowance, then the payment of that will be calculated from 3 days after you finished your job (3 days after you first contacted the office).

LHA is a set amount, dependent upon your needs (do you live alone, how old are you, which council area do you live in). The claim may take up to 2 months (dependent upon further enquiries if there are problems/questions with your forms etc), then you'll get it backdated to the start date.

Throughout all this, it is your responsibility to be paying your rent.

I live on my own in a one bedroom flat with one kitchen, bathroom etc so I should be ok to get the full LHA allowance.
I spoke to the council earlier today and they are sending me the forms out today.
The point of my post was that even though I may need to keep paying my rent while the council sort out the validity of my claim (Can't see why I would be refused), when they do finally get around to backdating my claim, will it start from when I finish work, or one month after I finish work?

    Thanks again once more.

3 working days after. So there's just a 3-day gap of no money between finishing work and getting benefits.

Well seeing as this board has been so reliable in the past and the mega amount of times you have been thanked, I will take your word for it!

One more thing, it says on my local authority website that the maximum LHA for a one bedroom dwelling for people over 25 is £81.92 for October but my rent is currently £415 a month...quite a big shortfall.
Will I have to make up the difference out of my benefits or will housing benefit cover the difference?

    Regards and thanks again.

  • LHA is only applicable to privately rented accom,if you rent from a local authority or housing assoc then its still housing benefit, exactly what you get does depend on a number of factors,so as ever its best to apply and see what happens,if I remember rightly if you were paid monthly and you get paid at the end of october then thats for november as far as benefits go
