x box 360 or ps3???

HI, Christmas is coming and would like to get my son a games console. He currently has a ps2 but would like to upgrade to either a ps3 or x box 360. I know nothing about them , (except price!!!), and would appreciate your thoughts.
Can you advise me on which one is preferable- graphics, game prices or functions
many thanks

  • The xbox has looooads more games at present than the PS3. Graphics etc, they are very evenly matched really. The PS3, is better at being an all round entertainment system in my opinion having the blue ray player and a few more features of that ilk.

Also, find out what most of his friends have got, because if they're playing online together, he'll want the same.

As an out and out games system I think the xbox may be better (and i own a PS3) and it's cheaper.

No they don't. Microsoft fixed that several months ago and all new models are built using a different manufacturing technique which means they run cooler and have better cooling on top.

As StewieGriffin said, find out what his mates are playing on. Most games are released on both and there's nothing in them really.

well we have had ours since feb and have already had 3 red lights on it.
we looked online and found a guy on you tube telling us how to fix it, which we did...our xbox now resembles something from a junk shop as we cannot put the casing back on it completly stops working. cannot find reciept so thats why we havent taken it back in pieces if you were wondering.
after this being the forth one, it stands to reason why i am now looking at the elite as stated in my i wanna post.

    thanks

hey would also like to say that apart from my own experiences with the consols xbox is great for the online gaming, graphics, and games.
hope my prev post hasnot made your mind up for you! everybody has different opinions and experiences with different things and this was mine.
agreed you should see what his friends have so if he does want online gaming etc then that will be possible. i am sticking with the xbox although just not the 360 version

hope this helps a little lol

If online play is a factor then check what his mates have as that could be the key. If his mates have both then remember that online gaming with the PS3 is free but not with the Xbox 360...
If online isn't his thing & as he already has a PS2 then it has to be the PS3. Most games are cross platform so can be had for both consoles. The thing that stands out for the PS3 is the in-built blu-ray player, which is awesome...;)
What if the Hokey Pokey really is what it's all about !!!
  • Is this machine going to be hooked up to an HDTV? Because if not, the blu-ray player will not be any more use than a DVD.

The main difference is in the online play, and the exclusive titles for each machine- As mentioned above, the xbox service is expensive in the long term, whereas the PS3 is free to play online. Games wise, tthe PS3 has Little Big Planet, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Gran Turismo, while the 360 has Forza and Halo. Which of these is better for your son depends on what kind of games he enjoys at the moment.

Also, there is the infamous Red-Ring-Of-Death... Reports vary as to the extent of the problem, but the Xbox360 is renowned for dying within a couple of years. I know several people who've been through 3 or 4 machines...
  • wow, I feel my ears burning

Casey, as mulhon has said, I put practically everything you could want or need in that post.

I personally prefer the 360, I think it as the better games, although I'm sure some would argue, at the end of the day it depends what you want to do with it:

360 - Much better online play (although you do have to pay a small amount for it) better FPS games (games where you run round and shoot things) basically, its a more grownup console. however, it is a little more prone to breaking than the ps3, with the much publicised ring-of-death, aka 3 red lights of doom, aka the end is coming etc etc but I digress. You do get a 3 year warranty with microsoft though

ps3 - came out over a year later than the 360 ad consequently there aren't as many games for it, especially top quality ones. It does however have blu ray, a high def version of the DVD.

There's a couple of really decent deals out for both consoles at the moment though, amazon or play for the ps3 and gamestation for the 360, not too sure about instore though.

Hope that helps (and my earlier post, if you can be bothered reading through it)

I am also undecided about whether to buy ps3 or xbox. I work in a secondary school so I asked some of the older boys who have both consoles what they would recommend. the general consensus was that if they were buying just one of them now it would be the PS3. I really wanted them to say xbox as it is so much cheaper! I have a couple of questions if anyone knows the answers:
Like the OP, my sons have a ps2 at the moment - I hear conflicting reports about whether you can play old ps2 games on the 40gb and 80gb ps3 consoles - what's the truth??
Will the xbox 360 be replaced anytime soon?? As it's been out longer than the ps3, I don't want to buy one just before it goes out of fashion!
    Thanks for any opinions x
