Bills...sorry if this is a bit boring.....

Options
Hello,
Have stopped paying mort/sec loan this month, went BR March this year.

Ive found a really lovely house, spoke to landlord- been totally upfront re bankruptcy- and he has said I can have the property.

What do I do regarding the bills?? Ive got Eon at my current house/British Gas at new prop- Ive also got a water meter and no idea what new house is. What actually happens regarding the bills?? Im getting really worried as I can imagine it all getting really complicated - will it matter that Im leaving one house (vol repo), to go to another??

  • You could ask the landlord whether the utility companies could be changed to the ones you already have, and who know about your BR. That might be easier than negotiating with British Gas (never easy!!) etc and having to explain about the BR.

They might be OK, tho - it must be a situation they've come across before. I'm sure there's someone on here who can advise!

    CB x;)
  • Thanks Chelsea
Landlord seemed ok with it- in fact he didnt really seem too bothered. Ive not rented for years so not sure how it all works- I think he felt the bills were my choice/problem. Ive been with Eon a while now- not included in my bankruptcy/on normal direct debit etc, can I just transfer it??

You contact them, tell them you are moving and find out if they supply the new place if it's a different area. If they do, take a final reading of old house, and new reading in new house and away you go! :)

Ditto for any of the other utilities - well it should be. Basically they should have no problems with you as you are already a customer and they are all fighting over customers!!!

And yes, you should be able to just transfer the dd - it is based on the person, not the property (I hope that made sense)

I suppose you could transfer it, but while your doing the process anyway why not look at one of those price checking sites and see if you can find a better deal?

Just make sure you take readings as soon as you move in for the utilities so you dont get stung with someone elses bill.

Although if you ring BG on day you move in and tell them they should just change name over for you.

  • I think it's the same as when you move house 'normally', if Eon are OK with you then I can't see a problem with doing a normal house move changeover with them. If I remember rightly, they would be the ones to tell BG to sling their hook (can you tell I'm not a fan?!!). I would contact Eon's home move department, explain the move to them and see what they say. If they don't know about the BR, I presume it's ok to not mention it, but if I'm wrong others will put me right!

I don't know if this is relevant, as you went BR in March, but when I had my CCCS interview they told me that I would probably have to put my utilities in somebody elses name as they the companies seem to be concerned about not getting paid. And I am not a BG fine either Chelsea, I moved to this house (the one I'm now leaving) 5 years ago - they consistently mixed me up with neighbour and are still ringing my house to speak to the neighbour. Complete waste of space - I hope my new landlord doesn't insist that BG is the provider....

Do they point blank refuse you though? Dont they have to provide utilties if requested even if it means putting a prepay meter in? or asking for a upfront deposit?
